After a short absence I am ready to rejoin my carnivore brothers and sisters and I find tumble weeds.  Where did everyone go?

Cassie what you see before you are the ruins of a once great forum of people.  Red headed Canadian women roamed wild saying any crazy thing that came to mind and they ruled this place with an iron fist and taught me much about life and meat.  Oh yes the meat, I think the idea of based diet is gone.  Once it reigned supreme here.  I left to meditate and find my own way at a time when only remnant transvestites would speak of potatoes here but now we are over taken.  I love the carnivore lifestyle I feel healthy and happy.  I once was diabetic but no more I am whole as long as I don't stray too far from my ribeyes.  I will tell you that there are those here still lurking in the shadows that are knowledgeable beyond belief about the carnivore way.  I affectionately call them the food nerds.  I know little but I have experienced much and I know what works for me and that young grasshopper is the real key.  I am a meat eater and have lost nearly 50 lbs.  If you desire this as well read what the Bear wrote in long long ago.  As I said before I know little but I can teach you.  I will be the Road Warrior and you can be that weird little kid with the boomerang and together maybe we can coax the knowledge givers back out into the light and it can be as it were in the before time.

Dustboy,  I've read "the Bear" and am already on the carnivorous path, but I'm new.  Anything you can share with me would be greatly appreciated.  I'm currently suffering from  a headache due to either caffeine withdrawal or the adaptation flu.  Helpful hints?

I think people over here are just less obsessed with food and more busy with life.
We know everything about diet so we can enjoy life and food without the urge to post pemmican picures everyday.

But you are right it's just too quiet lately but I don't really know any other zero carb (or close to zero) forum I would like to join. So I will stay here.

Oh I am staying.  And not so much for the diet stuff that is extra.  I am set in my ways and I don't really vary my diet that much anyway.  As far as other boards are concerned I went to one that was set up much like this one and people there were so sweet and nice to one another that I thought I was going to have my period.  I prefer the cynics here and enjoy the jabs we give and take around here.

O.K. Cassie.  Caffeine withdraw.  My question is why?  What are your goals?  To lose weight?  I drink a gallon of coffee a day, it has thermogenic properties (burns fat), staves off all kinds of diseases.  I can't drink it black so I add heavy whipping cream, are there some trace carbs, of course, but that just comes with it kinda like eggs.  I also enjoy diet Cokes because my goal is to lose weight and not to become a chemical free human being. I could care less about the chemicals at this point I just want to lose the weight and get into shape.
I am sure some out there will tell that coffee and diet coke will do horrible things to you but all they have done for me is help me to drop 50 lbs.

I'd rather you drink coffee with or without cream than diet drinks! Artificial sweeteners really are poisonous and they can also stimulate an insulin response, which can cause rebound hypoglycemia and subsequent overeating (if weight is your main concern, which it shouldn't be). They also cause face cancer!

Ahhh and were back, go ol' Red.  I am a diabetic for God sake I have got to deal with my weight problem before I can focus on chemicals which are not having any effects on me.  It is kinda like bacon, I hear "bacon bad" but I feel bacon gooooood.  And hypoglycemia is not my issue, I am type II diabetic hyperglycemia.  My blood sugar hover around the 80s when I am a good carnivore.

I will fight face cancer after I have beaten diabetes to a bloody pulp.  I will not have anything cut off of my body because I was too lazy to control my diet.  Besides if I get cancer I will just team up with this guy I know and go cook meth in the desert to raise money for my family when I pass away.

One more thing on the "diet coke is poison" topic and I mention with a little fear because I know there are some boozers on this site.  What about alcohol?  Nothing? Really?  No negatives?  O.k. I am outed here a little I don't drink, I don't care if you drink it just isn't my thing, I've tried and I don't like it.  I love a nice cigar and I have tried scotch because that is what they say you are suppose to drink with a cigar and it was awful as was brandy, wine, rum and beer.
So how about it you bunch of lushes.  What is worse alcohol or diet coke?  Toast

Yes, my goal is to lose weight.  I thought coffee had some kind of negative effect on insulin levels.  From what I read of "the Bear" he says he only has one cup a day because of the insulin thing.  I don't need any more cravings, or sugar swings.

I would say alcohol is marginally better, in strict moderation, mostly due to the fact that alcohol has been around for thousands of years and artificial sweeteners have been around for less than a hundred. But I still don't think alcohol is good for you. Just a hell of a lot more fun than aspartame! But if a person can give it up, then they probably should. And if they can't, then they definitely should.

I don't know the science, I just live it.  I am diabetic (which I know I mention frequently but it is the sole reason I came here)  I have taken control of my disease and I no longer take any medication, none.  If you try and slam on your brakes and eliminate everything in your diet that has some sort of bad label attached to it all at once you will fail.  I know I have done several times.  Give your self some space.  For God sake don't deal with induction and caffeine withdraws at the same time. Baby steps.  Look, if you are still here in two weeks on a ZC diet then tackle the coffee.  This is all just my opinion but for me that would be too much to ask to try both at the same time.  And if you heed all of the "this food is bad" advice you will wind up in the corner drinking butter and water.

Red, it comes down to a quality of life issue with me at some point.  Cigars will kill me if I let them but I like to have them to relax.  Same with diet drinks they make me feel normal like my life is not about what I eat all the time ya know.  I know that you are right about the chemicals but it is like the alcohol some times you have to just not care.

I agree with giving things up gradually. Your body goes through a lot of changes and you need to self-medicate your way through it, sometimes. But be aware that they are medications and shouldn't be taken forever. Nor should you take up anything 'bad' that you weren't previously addicted to, just to get through withdrawal.

Oh and Dusty, I bet my diet is a hell of a lot less like butter-and-water  than yours is! Razz Not to say you should stop doing what you're doing - it's obviously working for you and the fact that you're off meds is effing fantastic! But you, as a Diabetic, have special needs that need addressing. For a non-diabetic, I'm not sure it's optimal to reduce carbs as drastically as you have.

Oh, I am sure you are right.  If I were not diabetic do you think I would be on this diet?  Heck no.

POTATO FAMINE!!!!
Did that scare you?  It should, oh it should.

I'm no stranger to the potato. Although I probably only have them once or twice a week now that I've reintroduced carbs - even with all my years of low-carbing, I think I've still eaten enough spuds to last a lifetime!

To briefly summarize a bit that Paul F. Thompinks does on the great potato famine.  "Millions of people starved during a potato famine.  Millions!  Were these the pickest eaters in the world.  Ohhhh I'm starving, oh Lord Jesus please make it rain potatoes.  Why don't you try some corn.  Oh I don't like corn.  Maybe you should try it.  I have tried, I don't care for the texture.  Well go ahead and starve to death.  That is what I was doing before you started interviewing me for your book on corn."

I've already been without coffee for 10 days, so I don't think I'll go back just yet.  Maybe after I reach my goal.  My weight hasn't gone down at all.  I suppose that's to be expected.  I eating alot.  Fatty beef, bacon and some sausage with no sugar or fillers.  I'm sarting to feel less hungry.  That seems to be a good sign.  Ive been starving the last two weeks on ZC.  I'm just drinking water.  I've got about 15 lbs. to lose.  I'm 5'2", 129.2 lbs. as of this morning and around 27% body fat.  Being a 44 year old female is making this last 15 the hardest.  At 26 I was 210 and lost most of the weight on Atkins.  I've stayed between 120 and 130 since.  The anti-aging effects of zero carb according to the Bear will be a bonus.

Cassie if you can kick the habit just like that I say go for it, I cannot.  Deep down in my heart of hearts I know that Red is right about the diet Coke.  But I am reminded of the Karate Kid standing on the beach kicking at the waves as the roll in.  As the wave passes he kicks is knocked back a bit, but he reestablished his footing for the next wave.  I am that young Daniel LaRusso preparing for my next wave, whether it be coffee or diet Coke I will not stop kicking.

Somewhere Pat Morita is weeping.

Try to be best
‘Cause you’re only a man
And a man’s gotta learn to take it

Try to believe
Though the going gets rough
That you gotta hang tough to make it

History repeats itself
Try and you’ll succeed

Never doubt that you’re the one
And you can have your dreams!

You’re the best!
Around!
Nothing’s gonna ever keep you down

There's nothing like working out to that song. It makes you feel like you're channeling Daniel-san.

You will find the Bear on this site in the stickies.  You know those posts that are always there and you can't add to.  There is some good info.  He has REAL strong opinions some of which you just have to take them or leave them.
