I used too, but don't anymore.

The highly unsaturated polyunsaturated fatty acids in fish oil have been proposed to be immuno-suppressive, and this is the last thing I need, personally.  This usually explains why people start to feel better with arthritis and joint pain, etc., because it is actually suppressing the immune system from functioning and producing inflammatory cytokines.  This is not how you address the root cause of the issue in conditons like this.  It is a palliative treatment.

Additionally, cod liver oil specifically, contains high levels of exogenous vitamin D, which has also recently been proposed by an autoimmunity research group and a molecular biologist to be directly immuno-suppressive by deactivating the VDR (vs. activating it like another form of D) and suppressing innate immunity.

I do, however, wish fish oil didn't carry these downfalls, because high level DHA supplements really help with my depression... I achieve noticeable gains in participation in social activities, increased motivation and drive, and a more optimistic euphoric outlook on life in general (almost to the point of mania), as DHA is involved in many bodily functions like the brain, serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine, thyroid, etc.

It usually causes me increased bloating and abdominal discomfort when taken in supplement oil form (which is partially attributed, arguably, to the high amine content - Wink).

I am aware of the immuno suppresent qualities of fish oil. I have read that this is because of the high amounts of DHA. Your body uses omega 3 to make DHA only in the amounts needed by the body. Anymore than that will cause damage such as when you take fish oil. Also too much DHA will cause an imbalance between the omga 3 prostaglandins and omega 6. I would think you can counter act this by taking GLA which is an omega 6 derivitive.

I wonder what the effects would be if you took only small amounts of fish oil combined with GLA.

What do you mean, exogenous vitamin D. You<re saying that all forms of supplemental /dietary vitamin D is bad for the immune system (interrogation mark)

These days, I<m taking over 10000 U.I. a day, so I<m wondering. Pretty sure exogenous and endogenous (skin UV exposure) are one and the same.

I believe in the power of vitamin D!

And as believers of meat diets, you HAVE to believe that we do not require that much omega 3 as the fish oil sellers would like us to take. Fish oil is bad for my digestion, so I have an opened bottle that I should throw away as soon as I get home and wonder why I haven<t done so already (ain<t got anybody to give it to). Anyway, polyunsaturated fats make you more susceptible to oxidative stress.

Galeron, have you ever tried DMAE. That stuff is changing my life. Not because of depression, althought the supplement does seem to increase my mood, but because it does make me a lot more socially open, it<s hard to describe (notwithstanding my computer problem with apostrophes), I feel like my speach intelligence has greatly improved  and strangers are easier to approach (especially the more interesting, female strangers).

By the way, supplemental vitamin D is most often made from lanolin taken from sheep<s wool and exposed to UVB. So it is basically made by the same process as endogenous vitamin D, therefore I don<t see how it could be different unless processed in some way by the liver which would be bypassed by skin absorption.

Nah -

I still think cod liver oil is great.  I don't take that much, but it's one of the few things that helps if I get ill - I take a mass dose of vitamin A (natural) when this happens, and I get better much quicker.  Normally I take a bit of clo but not much.  If you have ever had skin problems then zinc and vitamin A (real) are great.  I find it hard to belive that the average bod in US gets enough real vitamin A what with all the margarines and crappy fats in the diet.  And all that tripe about getting enough from veggies - it's crap.  I suffered from eczema most of my life, and when I juiced carrots galore I still had it bad.  Didn't heal up until I started taking lots of CLO and eating butter/cream (and doing low-carb).

The fish oil thing is a bit different.  I found it great for motivation ona mixed diet but watch out - GLA is needed as well if you're going to take lots of EPA, or you can end up with anxiety.  I don't get much effect from EPA or GLA anymore and feel better just eating lots of animal fat (read:dairy fat and lard).
