Sometimes I get a bit impatient because my weight isn't dropping like I'd expected it to or because I gain a pound mysteriously (it always comes off again).
But the great thing about this diet is that I just feel too incredibly good to give up on it. Before, gaining weight would send me to the fridge to console myself, or send me running to yet another diet (a la Fluffy). Now, it doesn't really affect me. I know it won't last. The ecstatic and energy-charged feeling of keto-adaptation is unbeatable. My mood has simply never been better. I wouldn't trade this WOE for even the most sinful carb-based diet, even if I never gained a pound from it, if it meant that I wouldn't feel this effing fantastic all the time.
Just thought I'd share that!

No, not a big difference in diet, but a humongous difference in the way I feel. Before I went zero-carb I had been only having a maximum of about 15 or 20 g carb per day. Only a 10 or 15 gram reduction of carbs, but the biggest difference in the world, physiologically. _________________ I'm a vegetable-eater by proxy. And for years they told us our brains had to have glucose..... at first I really was worried about my brain ! But like you.... I feel so good on this WOE... and my thinking seems just as clear.
Wesley... one of the highest glycemic spikes is cold cereal. A real sugar onslaught. _________________ Be a better person today

Red, I feel exactly the same. The difference between my previous <10g carb diet and zero carb is amazing. I have been in a great mood since the day I started. My skin is clear and smooth. Bags of energy. Loving my food but no longer obsessing over when my next meal is (often forget meals!). This is it. This is the way we are suppsoed to eat IMO. |

Paleogirl,
That is fantastic! I have also been on a low-carb diet for about 18 months, as I suspected early in 2005 that wheat might be causing my poor digestion and rosacea. However, I never really tracked my carbs (but definitely <100 g) and I ate a lot of vegetables and some fruit each day.
But it always seemd like once every week, or every 2 weeks, I would be at a social gathering and cheat, eating way more carbs than I should and then experiencing the negative results. So I never really put together an extended period of time where my carbs were ultralow, say <20 g.
Since Thursday of last week, I have adhered religiously to the zero carb plan! No artificial sweeteners either. I have been eating meat, fish, eggs, and just yesterday introduced coconut oil, butter, and heavy cream in order to add more fat to my diet.
You say your skin is soft and smooth now. I am seeing mild improvement in my face, although my cheeks and nose still remain red and sensitive for the most part. Perhaps I am experiencing the withdrawal symptoms associated with the complete removal of carbohydrates. I am hopeful that my energy levels will begin to increase, my mood will become more positive, and my skin will clear up. One thing that is for certain is improved digestion. My stomach feels GREAT after eating - when I was eating lots of veggies I would always experience this "too full" uncomfortable feeling. Wheat and grains gave me horrible stomachaches. I am hopeful that improved digestion is just a prelude to all of the positive healing effects underway in my body, and eventually my complexion will reflect this improved state of health.
I am curious - How long have you been on the zero carb WOE, Paleogirl? Did you (or anyone else) experience any specific withdrawal symptoms after going zero carb?
Best wishes,
Peter
