Would this work with zero carb?

I perused through this month's issue of Muscle and Fitness, and there was a piece on infamous shock jock "Bubba The Love Sponge" and how he has lost almost 230 pounds in the past ten or so years. I came across his typical workout routine and I wanted to see what you think of it. As I would be starting from zero in regards to working out, I probably should do something a little bit easier starting out. Here it is.....

Day 1 - Chest, Back *
Day 2 - Shoulders *
Day 3 - Biceps, Triceps *
Day 4 - Legs *
Day 5 - Cardio, Abs, Calves, Forearms
Day 6 - Off
Day 7 - Same as Day 5

* - Also includes 30-45 mins. of cardio (heavy bag, elliptical, stair stepper, etc.), abs, calves, and forearms.

For his arms, he does the following:

Concentration Curl 3 sets/20 reps
Barbell Curl 3/20
Triceps Dip 3/20
Biceps Curl 3/20 *
Reverse-Grip Pressdown 3/20
Triceps Pressdown (rope) 3/20

* - After 3 sets and 20 reps, reduce weight and do 2 sets of 50 reps "to really blast the arms"

What type of supplementation or anything else would also work?

Of course, it all depends on your goals and nutrition and other factors, but...

I don't like it, especially for a beginner. The rep scheme stinks. I think 20 reps is too high for hypertrophy or strength. And 50 reps is darn near doing aerobics, not weight training. 3 X 8-12 reps is a good scheme for a beginner looking for general physical improvements. Lower reps (4-6), higher weight is generally good for raw strength conditioning.

Too many isolation exercises. Again, as a beginner, you're going to get your best bang for the buck with compound movements like squats, presses, deadlifts, etc. I don't think you need to worry about "blasting your arms" just yet. In fact, there are bodybuilders with impressive physiques that have never done a curl.

I'm not sure a 6 day split like that would be great, either. Take a look at the workout creation instruction on ExRx to get some ideas.

Doing cardio on the same day as weights is fine, but try to do them 6-8 hours apart. But again, the cardio needed depends on your goals.

And before anyone can give advice on supplements, we'd need to know what your daily nutrition is like already. Supplements are the last 2%. Daily intake of good, real food is what counts. Steak and eggs, baby!

That's just my advice. I'm hardly an expert. But you asked. Wink Of course, if you really like the looks of it, give it a shot for a few weeks! Anything is better than nothing. And just about anything will work... for awhile at least. Thumbs Up

ecrivain, that is a fantastic website. Thanks for posting it. I'm not sure I'm following his column on the right side, the stuff that says XXYYABXX, and all of that, can you help me? Embarassed Shock I am dense many days. Or, probably all days. Yup
