Whey protein powder is helping me out!

So you all know my incessant whingeing about my tennis performance on very low carbs - well - to be honest and I must be - I still drink wine in the evenings (dry) and a very small amount of red bell peppers when I feel the urge, as I've still not mastered the art of eating raw meat!!!

Anyway, today I didn't 'do' lunch because I wasn't hungry - but I had tennis training at 4pm and so had some whey protein powder with a raw egg and an egg yolk. Well my performance was much improved - I could sprint and had quite a good lesson.

What does this mean? I eat quite a bit of protein normally, although I am a high-fat babe as that is how I like doing things.

I'm trying to get my beef raw but it's hard to get it just right - either it is too spongy for my liking or I end up over-doing it in the pan.

Well I also got some nice remarks on my skin yesterday - a friend asked me if I was eating lots of veggies!! Ha!! I said no - lots of animal fat - that shut him up I can tell you.

I didn't feel full digesting the whey protein and it seemed to go 'down' in time for hitting the court. Also, as expected, my concentration was way up with no carbs in my system.

Am encouraged by this.

Hey that's good that you found something that works! Happy
RedTulipMoon

that is quite interesting! Can i ask you a question...do you think that would work for bicycling too?? my hubby recent took up bicycling and i was wondering without carbing up what the next best choice is...
LOOPS

yeah I don't see why not. I'm wondering if my body is better at using protein for the extra kick than it is fat. Anyway I have no idea why it works but it does.

Let me know how it goes - I really hope I'm onto something reliable here - no more carbing up for me as it really destroys my concentration on the court.
Dean

I think it works cuz the protein can be converted to glucose via gluconeogenesis easier than fat can. The glucose is then used for that quick fuel like with glycogen stores.

Ok -

I had to ditch the whey protein coz I got a small patch of eczema come back on my neck and I've been 99% free of eczema since going VLC.

BUT....today I made a raw egg smoothie with 2 extra yolks thrown in and the results were the same - I was pretty full after breakfast but by the time I hit the court I had more energy.

For me more protein works better than more fat for some reason. Although to be fair I haven't really experimented with raw animal fat that isn't dairy yet.
Hellistile

I've had cravings for carbs for a couple of days so last night decided to load up on fat. Took a small scoop of whey protein, 1/2 cup heavy cream, 2 raw egg yolks, 1/2 cup water, some cinnamon, beat up and drank. Cured me. Today had the same for breakfast. Kept me going until lunch. Had a 3 yolk, feta cheese omelet for lunch. Not only did all the cravings disappear but my energy went through the roof. Need to do this until I'm back in ketosis but it's the raw egg yolks I'm sure of it. That's the only difference in my diet atm.

Loops, it sounds like a dairy allergy but don't give up on the raw eggs. Make those smoothies with them. Just ask Dean.

Isopure Whey protein ,love it Wink

do you think that adding a tablespoon of coconut oil to a whey protein shake would blunt the insulin response and slow down the absorbtion of it's contents?
kinda like a time released protein shake? plus it adds the element of fats with the protein, making it a complete 'meal replacemet' or 'weight gainer',
for those wanting to add quality calories for adding muscle size and weight.Sounds good to me! certainly better tasting then the alternative (olive oil) boy did that ever give me the runs! Bonkers
cygnus

Adding coconut milk is an excellent idea.

When are you using the Whey protein? Whey is not a good all around protein source. It is ideal protein for post workout, because you do want a fast acting protein immedialtely after you workout to boost recovery and to help prevent any further muscle breakdown..

A blend of milk(casein) egg and whey (from concentrate and isolate) is a better protein powder to take as a meal replacement.
Moronic_Pathways

not the best in terms of amino acid profile/index of the protein?
it's the most complete from what i hear. Also, adding the coconut oil to whey protein should slow down absorbtion rate Wink
plus the added fats would make an excellent source of calories over procecced carbs and sugars found in commercial weight gainers. The perfect extra calories to encourage natural healthy weight gain!
the good thing is that once the ammount of size is achieved, much of it can be retained through eating enough protein from foods alone- considering if you train and rest appropriatly. i am thinking Isopure 2 scoops,3xa day-
thats an extra 150 grams a day,600 calories.Plus the coconut oil ,that's an extra 600 cals maybe (two tablespoons a shake),that's an extra 1,200 quality cals a day!

Whey is an excellent protein,it has lactoferrins, immunoglobins and some cool growth factors.

but it is so fast acting that it can be "processed' through the body in 45 minutes!! Adding fats will slow this down, but you would need another serving soon after. That's why it is an ideal post workout protein.

You need some slow and medium acting proteins to balance out the whey.

The amino acids from whey enter the bloodstream so fast, that when they stimulate protein synthesis, alot of these amino acids are "shuttlled" to the liver where they are oxidized and used for energy..
So alot of the amino acids are used as an energy source, not for muscle repair. Think of them just being "burnt off".

As for the slower released proteins, they help prevent muscle tissue breakdown more efficiently than whey due to their slower release into the bloodstream. You get a nice "trickle" of amino acids into your system.

Alot of trainers recommend a serving of cottage cheese before bed, because of its slow release of amino acids can help a great deal in muscle repair while you sleep and helps prevent anticatabolism.

Try this after your workout.
40 gams of whey isolate
30 grams of glutamine
20 oz of water blend and drink.

the glutamine can be used in place of carbs to replace glycogen and help slow muscle breakdown. It works unbelievably well..

It is hard though to keep it down after a really intense workout.

LOL!
30 grams of glutimine?! 15 grams at once gets me insanly manic and irritable! Bonkers

hey nomadic -

ME TOO!!!! I am ULTRA sensitive to some supplements - and most of all isolated amino acids. I went on a rampage once after taking glutamine - it sent me round the bend within a day (I took like 4g).

I even had to quit taking some magnesium I had because it was chelated with glycine and I ended up feeling really off after a week - changed to a non-amino chelated Mg and was fine again. I didn't even know WHAT it was until I did some research.

Who is it here that takes liver tabs? I got some the other day - some really strong ones and they are really helping with the tennis too.

Ahhh.. dessicated liver tabs..Ol' Vince Gironda has some of his pupils take 100 a day. Of course they fell out of favor and I never knew why with some of the great studies done with mice and endurance while eating dessicated liver.
I talked with Sally Fallon once and told her about my aversion to eating liver. She says that dessicated liver(from Argentina) is an acceptable alternative

LOL! Laugh i took about 15 grams at once for a week for breakfast, and later that night i would become completly manic! i once got soo enraged i almost got into it with one of my managers at work! 5 grams is enough for me,not sure if fasting has anything to do with it,but most likely caused adverse reactions to the glutimine.

also, carefull with the dissected liver tabs, i once read in a book mega nutrients by dr.newbold (also an all meat/fats advocate from the 70s') and it was stated that it could also cause manic reactions in the non-diagnosed people that may be prone to or have bipolar...
always be weary i say..

oh yeah -

I just figured that one out for myself with the liver tablets. I was wondering why I was getting insomnia back the last few nights and was a leeedle bit angry on the tennis court yesterday. Wow. Those are strong pills I got. I think I might just take one occasionally, but it actually recommends like at least 10 pills a day on the bottle - 10 would send me into orbit!

I wonder - does fresh liver have the same effect on bipolars? I've never been diagnosed but the symptoms run in my family - we are all musicians, writers and artists etc so it wouldn't surprise me.

Oh well, back to the low-dose multi for me then...

Thanks for the info

I just bought a tub of banana flavor and I LOVE the chocolate flavor.

I'm gonna try the banana flavor with coconut milk.

BAh!!

I've been struggling again this week. I put it down to not going low-enough carb and possible overtraining. Well see I still indulge in wine and I think this is knocking everything off base.

Ok, so today I had a smoothie with a banana (I know I know), but also with raw liver and raw eggs + egg yolk and some ginseng and I was a lot better round the court. Got out of bed and my thigh muscles were HURTING so I thought either I do the banana or I take the day off. Well I am truly ADDICTED to my training lessons so I decided on the banana.

No harm done (yet) - felt fine the rest of the day (aka normal low/med appetite).

Not sure where that leaves me right now. Training is becoming more intense so either I quit the wine (wah) or I embrace the shock horror carb-laden banana.

One day...one day....I will vence (defeat) them all on zero carbs!!!

Whey protein powder is helping me out!

Fatigue is a definite sign of overtraining. It seems that you are getting into a cycle of needing sugar for instant energy to workout which is causing more fatigue, etc. Art deVany has some excellent information about this (www.arthurdevany.com).

My .02 worth.

Thanks -

it's not really fatigue per se - just that I think it's a lot of extra stress on my muscles on vlc. I don't have any problems playing a match or anything, it's just the hard training with lots of sprints. Also the intensity of my training hasn't really changed very much over the past 4 years, just my diet.

My muscles feel better this morning and yesterday's session was the usual hard intensity. I didn't have any more carbs after the banana the whole day (1 piece of avocado and a little bit of lemon juice and herb tea excepted).

Thanks for the link - I'll look it up.

Update

ok yesterday was really awful - could barely run round the court without feeling knackered. Banana wasn't a good idea apparently after a few days or wasn't enough- whatever, the results weren't good.

So how long is this adaptation supposed to take? I've been struggling for like 10 months with my tennis and am beginning to have my doubts about my muscle's needs. It seems to be coming to either my diet or tennis which is really sad.

I need help and encouragement!!

Thanks

today was really good. I had lots of strength on the court for some reason. So all is not lost. I ate lots of raw chicken liver before, plus a little whey protein powder. Didn't have an allergic reaction.

any updates on your protein shakes? i am still considering on using them for a 'clean bulk' in order to gain some intitial size then go off of them completly while eating a high protein/fat diet.

the protein powder makes me feel a bit full, and also I think a little stimulated. I looked on the back of the packet and it seems the powder has a very low tryptophan content in relation to the other amino acids - that and the fact that I turn protein into sugar quite easily is probably what is giving me the energy. Bloating isn't good though - so I only take a little. Dairy doesn't make me bloated though and I'm fine with it as long as I don't eat too much (cheese, cream etc).

I take liver tablets as well which help although at first they made me a bit manic but that seems to have gone away now.

huh -

I just noticed I said I didn't feel full on whey protein before but I did last time. I think I added too much fat the last time or something.
LOOPS

yeah - this is weird - I backed off the liver tablets because of the reaction I had initially, then found I could take them again for some reason. In fact I have been sleeping a lot better recently and that's the only thing that's changed. Oh I also found a 'cell-grown' multivitamin which contains small amounts of vitamins etc. if you only take two tabs (it says to take 9) - I find this helps me with sleep.

I remember reading somewhere that you should eat the organ of the animal that corresponds with your own trouble i.e. if you have liver problems you should eat liver, kidney problems kidney etc. Well I have done a fair bit of partying here in Chile over the last 5 years, and before that University was a lot of drinking in England, and I drink a couple of glasses of wine most days that I'm staying in anyway.

Well maybe eating the liver and taking the tablets set off some kind of healing reaction in me, because I feel better now than initially. Dunno. Maybe it's just all in my head!

I think I'm edging back towards taking carbs before training. Went for a swim last night (no carbs) which is fine but swimming is waaaay lower intensity stuff.

Today I'll be sipping orange juice during training after protein/fat breakfast. Then I'll have the extra sugar on-call. Did this before and it worked ok - I still miss having the full glycogen stores but whatever, anything is better than the hit-and-miss days on no carbs.
