hey sandy
i'm here but yeah i am back at school taking a class (finance) thats 2 hours a day for 3.5 weeks, covering 18 weeks of info!! Its like a crash course.
Thanks for the links, I'll take a look at them. I think someone posted the same thing on BR and Lyle said that low/no carbs causes ESS but not true hypothyroidism which is often autoimmune related, and the addition of carbs can cure or reverse ESS (euthyroid sick syndrome) which is what I believe I had since adding carbs has given me my energy back and so far has helped me to lose weight (I'm down to 125, now only 15 lbs from what i weighed in october instead of 25 lol).
but yeah that and I've been at the doctor like 20 times this month trying to figure out stomach issues once and for all. Getting a CAT scan on friday to hopefully get a better picture of whats going on. I'm also starting to get IBS symptoms. Oh well...

So opti, tell us about what you're doing, diet-wise. It seems to be working to get your thyroid up and running again.

Sandy -
heres the link http://www.bodyrecomposition.com/forums/showthread.php?t=33085
Lyle posted a ton of studies on thyroid and diet, its pretty interesting.
As for the meds, nope. I did get prescribed synthroid and took them for a couple of days and it just made everything much worse - tired, sleepy, and way more hungry. My doctor told me to stop taking them and see how I feel until my next appt. I am feeling fantastic right now in terms of energy and mood and weightloss.
Red-
Diet-wise I'm eating high protein and (gasp!) lower fat (not crazy low) and moderate carbs because of my stomach problem. Can't eat too much fat (I tried for months) because it causes the flare ups. Same goes for sugary stuff and I found that I can't really tolerate fruits either. So I'm eating things like skinless chicken, fish (fatty fish is ok for me), and rice for my carbs, sometimes pasta/oatmeal but right now exclusively rice since I suspect a gluten intolerance (the bowel problems I've been having).
I also found out I love squash and I eat a lot of that plus other random cooked veggies (raw veggies are hard on the digestion). But obviously none of the bad veggies (for thyroid).
If I had to guess ratios I would say close to 40p/40c/20f but I don't actually calculate that. Thats a common body builder's ratio and I've done it before in the past with success. I WAS eating eggs up until last week when I just got sick of the flare ups that I got with them (even just 2 eggs caused burning!). So my fat % is suffering because I just can't eat the stuff without getting pain. Not even fish oil capsules (I thought about taking those to up the fat but they cause pain too).
I also have been using salt substitute to up my potassium (because its pure K) because I've read that K deficiency is also a cause for low thyroid function and suspect I wasn't getting much, if any, from my previous diet, since K decreases when the meat and stuff is cooked and the water leaks out. I don't eat enough veggies to get sufficient amounts and I can't handle fruits anymore (bye bye bananas) so the salt sub is the only way to go for that, since K supps only are allowed to be 99mg per tablet by the FDA (I have no clue why since the RDA is 4900mg).
Anyway, I also occasionaly eat a small amount of brazil nuts for the selenium, but not too often (2-3 times a week). I don't seem to get problems from those.
Also, Sandy, this is way off topic but the thread title kinda made me laugh. Its a combination of two of my fav songs ("Opticon" and "Where's Gerrald").

my daily calories are a bit low just because I am trying to only eat when hungry and I am pretty much never hungry, most days, due to my stomach issues. Some days are a lot higher, when my stomach flares up and makes me ravenous, but I try not to let these days happen to often anymore (because it was those days that led me to gain weight/binge eat in the first place).
I would estimate I am around 1200 or a little under. However I read (from Lyle's work again lol) that the body can take a significant deficit (<1000 calories/day) for ~3 weeks before there is a significant decrease in RMR. So I refeed (regardless of hunger) once every ~2-3 weeks now. Extreme but temporary calorie restriction is doable if you're smart about it. Plus I feel completely full everyday, I don't even feel like I'm dieting in the least bit, so I figure I may as well take advantage of this. I just hope it lasts long enough (without flare ups) for me to get the rest of the weight off.
It also helps that I cut out all foods that were EVER trigger foods for me. These foods are pretty much the same things that cause flare ups anyway so its a win-win. Stuff like PB (havent touched since march), bananas (yes unfortunately for me i used to binge on them with pb or just eat frozen overripe ones), instant flavored oatmeal, and anything with sugar/artificial sweetener really, and ANY type of nut butter.
It doesnt bother me anymore that I'm not totally in love with what I'm eating when I came to realize that food had become a source of pleasure/fun/obsession for me instead of just nourishment, and now I'm finally free of that. I have no incentive to eat unless i am truly hungry now and I love it. "A moment on the lips is definitely not worth a lifetime on the hips."

Very good Plat, this makes sense re the refeeds. I found you on the other forum btw
Yes I have been wondering about how some people restrict their calories to less than 1000 calories a day, and how this is related to individual BMR levels, I am sort of thinking whether the BMR calculations are correct when I see some people are eating way lower than their BMR and still maintaining. I know doing that long term is bad from thyroid point of view, but you are doing refeeds which is very smart. I think the body has a natural mechanism to drive us to eat more if we restricted calories for a period, that’s why some people fall into the fast/binge cycle. But I think you should be OK if you are planning your refeeds.
Will speak to you on the other forum.
