What is the best way for bum like me to eat raw? What's the best way to get some raw meat in?
I buy from the supermarket a lot.
Should I just try not to cook the steaks so much?

I seared mine on the outside.

That is what i'm moving towards... searing on the outside. Get your pan screaming hot (don't use non-stick though!) I rub my steaks with a tiny bit of olive oil (or animal fat) and coat generously with dry mustard powder and dry cumin. Sear both sides. Take off the pan, let rest 5 minutes. Eat! I'm slowly eating mine more rare. I'm down to medium rare now. I love how it tastes, more rare, but I still have to do things like eat it while watching tv or surfing the net as it kind of freaks me out!
Not supermarket meat, but I LOVE sashimi dipped in soy sauce that i've mushed a bunch of wasabi and ginger in. I always feel SO GOOD after doing that. Hmmmm... guess where i'll be going for lunch today... mmm..
Also, I think I (and someone else) posted a raw egg drink in the recipe section? I think that is the best/easiest way to get raw in. Kinda like just drinking eggnog.
I'll dig up a recipe with raw ground beef and put it in the recipe section.

One suggestion I saw on here was jerky....which is raw meat, dried. So, I promptly drug out my dehydrator and have made 3 batches of jerky in the last week! The store stuff is gross and too full of salt and sugar, but I know what's in my homemade stuff: meat (pork, chicken, or beef), onion powder, and garlic powder. THAT'S IT. My daughter loves it too...have to hide it from her or she'll eat a whole batch at once!
I thought that and raw egg smoothies would be a good way to start, and they have been. I've eaten a bunch of jerky every day, and feel great. I've also starting slowly cooking my steaks less and less each time. Getting closer to bleeding all the time.
Having said that, after reading the Steak Tartare recipe on here last night, I've been finding myself wondering what it tastes like because it sounded good. Going raw may happen sooner than I think!!!

Pemmican is also great! It has a good amount of fat, which is a good thing since the bulk of calories should be from fat. There is a recipe in the red meat section, as well as one in the chicken section for chicken pemmican.

Maybe this is a dumb question... but why is jerky and pemmican considered raw when you have to "cook" it? Is it the low temperature, or does drying not change things as much as regular cooking?

My food dehydrator isn't hot...it just blows air through the trays of food, pulling out the moisture. The meat does tend to darken as it drys, but it's not cooking.

I put my jerky in front of a fan on the balcony and leave it there for a day or two. It gets really dark but is not cooked!
Dave just slice the meat - if you get it from the supermarket it's easiest for the mind to eat something like filet mignon - really thin and small. If you need to, dip it in a sauce, pop it into your mouth and swallow.

But I have concerns about food posioning!
And germs??

slice off the outer layer, or dip the hunk of meat into boiling water b4 slicing.

As long as you sear the outside of your beef you're fine as far as germs go. The first few times of eating raw meat I was worried, but after a while you get used to it and now I almost can't eat beef any other way.

As I am still researching/considering for this WOE, I did try my first rare steak at O'Charley's tonight. I LOVED IT! So tender and juicy, it was AMAZING!

You know what I just had that is incredibly easy and good? Take a raw egg yolk...and I personally would get a good quality free range egg if possible. Put it in a shot glass, drink it. Its so tasty!
Look, here is a pic showing the difference between the 1.50 for 18 eggs at grocery store compared with the 3.50 for the free ranged eggs from the Amish farm I buy from. The taste is also way different, so so much more flavor in the dark yellow/orange Amish eggs.

Oh wow, what a difference.

yeah, I buy those beautiful golden yolks too. $5 a dozen, but they are so yummy!
I managed to eat one, soft boiled, this morning. First protein and fat I eat in a week! I still feel so dizzy and weak, it is unreal!
I also got some chicken and started it in the crockpot for some bouillon...

Have been eating whole eggs raw for four years with no ill effects. Some people claim it is bad , others say it is just fine. BTW Bear concluded that it was just fine to eat the whole thiing raw. For variety reasons I sometimes fry the eggwhite and then dump the yolk on top of it and eat it raw. Cooking the yolk is definitely not a good idea.

Karen, ditto here.
I buy 30 eggs in a flat for really cheap (cheapest eggs there are). These eggs have good yolks and, if they pass my "inspection", I eat them raw all the time. The fear of salmonella is totally overblown. As long as the eggs look healthy (like a firm yolk) and don't have any funny smell, then they are perfectly safe. I eat a TON of them!
I HATE the slimy egg whites! Here is how I separate the egg yolks... and at the same time "inspect" the egg to make sure it is "safe".
I crack the egg at the sink. I dump the contents into my hand and open my fingers slightly... allowing the nasty white to run through them. Then, I pinch that little white cord thing (the umbilical cord!) off the egg yolk. The egg yolk should be nice and round and firm, and not run through my fingers. By doing it this way, I have removed everything except the egg yolk... which should be nice and round and firm and healthy looking. I then throw these into my blender or put into a glass or a bowl... all depending on whether I am making smoothies, or "instant" eggnog... or just eating them with pepper... which is a great way to eat them.
Eating them in a bowl with pepper is how I first ate them... I just put like three in a small bowl, added pepper, and ate them. They tasted like the runny eggs in over easy eggs... which I used to "pop" into my mouth at the end of a fried egg meal, and it would burst in my mouth. The only difference is these raw egg yolks are cold... so it is like eating over easy eggs that you let set on your plate too long. If you don't like over easy eggs, then you might not like these.
But, with heavy whipping cream and vanilla and nutmeg, you have to be a Scrooge to not like eggnog! Another way to make eggnog is by putting everything into a blender. Try this recipe... and tweak it to the consistency/taste you prefer.
Holiday Eggnog
2 ice cubes
4-6 raw egg yolks
1/2 cup heavy cream
1/2 tbsp nutmeg
1/4 tbsp cinnamon
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 tsp almond extract
Blend the shit out of this stuff... and it will be very frothy and GOOD!

Absolutly sure, I can even look it up since I pared down Bear 's thread to an absolute minimum essentials.

Here we go:
| Quote: | I have tried raw whole egg mixed into my food and it does help with getting the food to go down, and reduces 'cling'- it effectively substitutes for my missing saliva. The cling is worst in my favourite food- beef, so anything which helps me eat more of it is great.

Karen,
He was certain for a long time that egg whites were not good to eat. The biotin thing. Then, several folks (including me) convinced him that it was no big deal. Then he changed his mind about it.

what if the eggs are runny? my eggs always seem to be runny, the whites really runny and the yolks easily broken-though it's bright yellow and smells perfectly fine..been excited to try it out but maybe not with these ones.Visisted Washington last winter and noticed that the eggs there where thick, dark yolks and the whites where huskier and thicker then the ones up north..hmmm.It may have been fresh from the farm as well...

It is quite possible to worry oneself to ill health by dwelling on the dreadful parasites in raw meat, the deadly salmonella in raw aeggs and all the other uspeakable dangers. There is always the safe alternative of cooked food.
