What Did You Eat Raw Today? *July*

I thought I'd make this a daily challenge sort of thing. Just a simple challenge to eat some animal protien raw each day. We could start a new one each month.

Today I had a raw egg yolk, I drank it straight up from a shot glass. It's thick yellow-orangy creaminess was a wondrous delight. I haven't been eating much raw lately, so this challenge will help me get back to it.
bleublonde

How fun! What a great idea!

How raw is raw? Laugh I sear my beef on the outsides. I hope that counts, because it's delicious.

So today, I had about 20 oz. beef seared only on the outside. Cool
Bobi-p

Sounds good to me!! Grin
ReddyMcMeaty

What a great idea!! Something especially healthy every day!
There isn't anything I can eat raw in my fridge now so I'll have to wait until I shop....maybe today or early tomorrow if it's too hot.
Heather

I did it! I ate one raw egg yolk from a shot glass. Wow

I didn't break the yolk and swallowed it in one gulp, so I didn't really taste it.
Bobi-p

Egg Nog!
ReddyMcMeaty

is wine made from raw grapes?
Bobi-p

Yes, stomped on and then fermented!!! Sounds gross doesn't it?

Yes, wine is raw food. Hard liquor is distilled though, which involves heating. So that wouldn't count. I think the brewing of beer also involves heating. Cheers!!! Toast
ReddyMcMeaty

well, yesterday I got my wine in, though I don't think raw vegitation counts. Today it will be raw yolks.
fabshelly

Mom brought me a seared-on-the-outside baseball cut steak for breakfast. I cut off the outside and gave it to Alice, and enjoyed the melt-in-my-mouth texture of the raw inside.
Jaybird

Yesterday I had 4 raw egg yolks in my coconut milk eggnog.

Heather, that's cool you did a raw yolk shot Smile

Has anyone ever done raw oyster shooters? I guess you have one raw oyster in each shot glass with some kind of sauce on top like tomato or v8 with a little hot sauce. And sometimes vodka is added. I would skip the vodka, I'm not of fan of the vodka myself. Anyway, its something I want to try sometime.
sallie828

Raw oysters are awesome!! We eat 'em by the dozens here in Louisiana. When I was young I would eat them with cocktail sauce, but now I love the flavor of just the oysters with their salty liquid right out of the shell. But we have a rule here...I think it's because of the summer...you don't eat oysters in the months that don't have an "R" in them. But man...come October and all through the holidays, people have parities and open oysters by the sack...mmmmmmmmm.
jl53563

I've decided to take the plunge and have some raw egg yolk shooters for breakfast. 4 sounds like a good number. I'll post back later with how it goes.
ReddyMcMeaty

maybe I'll have a "protein shot" raw of course, straight from the source. Wish me luck.
sallie828

Just wondering...should I include the 'protein shots' as part of my daily food intake total? Crack Me Up

Are you talking about what I think you are talking about???

By the way, my raw eggs yolks for breakfast went fine. I can't believe how filling they are. I think I could get by with 2 or 3 instead of 4.

I think it's already outta hand, Heather.

I really need to get a boyfriend.

For the protein.
Heather

I did eat a raw yolk today!

I really don't like the cold and slimy texture so there better be benefits to this. Confused

Maybe I will take an egg out of the fridge before bed and try a room temp. yolk tomorrow morning.
totoro

I'll join in!

Three raw egg yolks for breakfast, swallowed whole with a little water--like swallowing pills.

I have been doing this every day for the past three weeks or so. I usually have 1-2 yolks with lunch, too. Makes me feel great!

I have found that three at breakfast is just the right amount. If I have more, I get that scary, too-full feeling.
Hellistile

Nothing yet but my cats had big bowls of raw ground bison for breakfast. Laugh Laugh Laugh Laugh Laugh Laugh Laugh Laugh
and boy were they happy, happy, happy Laugh Laugh Laugh
Jaybird

Yesterday I didn't have any raw animal foods! Dang. Well, my 3 yr old has been begging for some raw salmon, however I don't believe the fish we got is sushi grade so we are panfrying the rest of it today. I need some raw red meat. I don't have any good quality though. I'll be downing some egg yolks today at least.
TidalPool

Today for lunch I had sashimi...

4 salmon
2 yellowfin tuna
2 white tuna

OMG... I could live on this stuff!!! REally!!!

Me too. ERRR...I'll get back to you on the protein part. Embarassed

Yesterday, raw egg smoothie and raw chicken in the form of homemade jerky.

Today, raw pork in the form of homemade jerky.

How'm I doing?? Cool
Huntress

Sirloin stk

I had a half a pound thin sliced raw sirloin stk with wasabi and
low sodium soy sauce. Man that is SOOO tasty ( filling too)
Got to get some more fish tho.
totoro

Yesterday: 3 raw egg yolks for breakfast, and 2 more with my steak lunch.
sallie828

I just tried a raw egg yolk with a little half & half...I didn't taste the yolk, as I just swallowed it whole, but the h&h was ok...that's the first time I ever tasted that by itself too.
Heather

Yesterday I wasn't feeling well, I don't think a raw yolk would have stayed down.

But I'm ready to start over today! Yup

Just one yolk for me.
ReddyMcMeaty

Was it the wine Heather?
Heather

Yeah it was the wine, I have never gotten that sick from drinking, especially that little. I have been sick but that usually after drinking alot more. I think it may have been because I bought a different brand, but that shouldn't make me that sick. It was awful and I still have a headache.... Embarassed
ReddyMcMeaty

You know I had some red wine (and good stuff) the other night... probably the same amount as you. I wasn't sick stomach wise but had the most awful headache that WOULD NOT LEAVE.
Heather

It's definitely not a normal reaction for me. Just checked fitday for 1 small bottle.

Heather

Today I ate one raw egg yolk.

BTW I am not getting used to swallowing it, I tried it room temperature today and it was only slightly better.

What are the benefits of this again?

My 8yo son saw me and decided he wanted to try it too and he did, he swallowed a raw yolk himself. I should get double points for that! Laugh

Heather, sorry to hear that. Certain brands of wine give me a headache/make me feel terrible. I hardly drink wine anymore (had my second glass this year a week ago or so) but I remember my husband had the same problem with certain brands...???

Maybe you could try a raw egg drink, kinda like egg nog? Would that be tastier? That is cool your son ate a raw yolk! Grin

Jessica
Dean

Heather,

Just put three egg yolks into a glass. Pour in a nice amount of heavy whipping cream and then put some nutmeg and real vanilla extract in there and whisk it all together! Go easy on the nutmeg and vanilla until you figure out how much. This is eggnog at it's finest! Wink Yup
Heather

I will try that and let you know how it turns out.
Heather

But I am not doing three eggs Dean! Shock

One to start.

Let us know how it works out! Grin

I haven't had anything raw since Friday at lunch (sashimi). It's the only thing I really eat raw. I think i'll have to break down and go pick up some more today. Ugh, i've been craving it! I wish I could make it myself.

If I don't get any sashimi today, i'll attempt to eat some rare beef or raw eggs.

Jessica
Dean

I HATE the slimy egg whites! Here is how I separate the egg yolks... and at the same time "inspect" the egg to make sure it is "safe".

I crack the egg at the sink. I dump the contents into my hand and open my fingers slightly... allowing the nasty white to run through them. Then, I pinch that little white cord thing (the umbilical cord!) off the egg yolk. The egg yolk should be nice and round and firm, and not run through my fingers. By doing it this way, I have removed everything except the egg yolk... which should be nice and round and firm and healthy looking. I then throw these into my blender or put into a glass or a bowl... all depending on whether I am making smoothies, or "instant" eggnog... or just eating them with pepper... which is a great way to eat them.

Eating them in a bowl with pepper is how I first ate them... I just put like three in a small bowl, added pepper, and ate them. They tasted like the runny eggs in over easy eggs... which I used to "pop" into my mouth at the end of a fried egg meal, and it would burst in my mouth. The only difference is these raw egg yolks are cold... so it is like eating over easy eggs that you let set on your plate too long. If you don't like over easy eggs, then you might not like these.

But, with heavy whipping cream and vanilla and nutmeg, you have to be a Scrooge to not like eggnog! Another way to make eggnog is by putting everything into a blender. Try this recipe... and tweak it to the consistency/taste you prefer.

Holiday Eggnog
2 ice cubes
4-6 raw egg yolks
1/2 cup heavy cream
1/2 tbsp nutmeg
1/4 tbsp cinnamon
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 tsp almond extract

Blend the shit out of this stuff... and it will be very frothy and GOOD! Yup
Jaybird

Heather...yeah, no need to swallow the egg yolk plain if you really don't like to. Eggnog is a great way to do it Smile

Today I didn't have any animal products raw. I had home made kimchi with my baked chicken though...its raw with lots of live good bacteria..something I really need to get a handle on the candida issue.
Heather

Okay I can't do it the egg nog way, I think it is easier to eat raw beef instead.
jl53563

I had one raw egg yolk today.
TidalPool

Today I ate a metric buttload of sashimi.

Shock

Usually, I only will eat a 1/2 metric buttload of sashimi.

Bonkers Grin Wow Shock

Jessica

Three raw egg yolks with breakfast, and two more later in the day.

I haven't eaten truly raw meat yet (except sashimi and pretty rare steak), but I don't have a problem at all getting raw egg yolks in. I separate the yolk from the white using an egg separator (and I pinch that yucky umbilical cord off, too, Dean!) Then, I put a little cold water in my mouth, add the yolk, and swallow it all down like a pill. I don't have to taste it at all or deal with the texture that way.

I like the egg nog and smoothies, too, but this way is really quick and easy, wth no blender to clean.
Jaybird

I'm having kefir coconut milk with 3 egg yolks (okay, and 1/2 a banana).

Jaybird wrote:

I've heard of kefir coconut milk... how do you make it? Do you have to get special coconut milk kefir culture?

Sounds tasty!

Thx! Jessica
Jaybird

You take regular milk kefir grains and just use coconut milk to culture instead. I used Thai Kitchen canned coconut milk...its only other ingredient is guar gum. I bet it would be so much better if I made it fresh. Only so much time though with a 3 1/2 yr old and a 9 month old! But it came out tastey anyhow. I didn't find it drinkable plain though like I can regular kefir.
Heather

I did one raw yolk again, one gulp nothing added.

Thanks! Dang, I threw out my milk kefir grains a couple of years back when I was buying raw milk (as I realized that milk products, raw or not, give me sinus issues). Ah well. I'll have to locate some.

Have you tried the water kefir crystals? Those look interesting. Not sure if you can make them into something 0 or low carb?

All I had time for today was raw Water!!! Laugh

Yesterday: 5 raw egg yolks (3 for breakfast and 2 more with lunch).

Plan to do the same today.

I'm seeing a pattern here!
Heather

I did one raw yolk yesterday.
Heather

I did one raw yolk again, this is getting easier. Smile
Oh and my raw beef too!
Jaybird

I'm tired of raw yolks...I'm craving a nice juicy raw steak. Yup
Heather

I did two raw yolks yesterday.
TidalPool

Ate my raw sashimi yesterday...lol... I swear this is the only time I eat anything raw! I looked up how many calories, and was stunned to see it was like 350 calories. But very satisfying!

I really want to start eating sashimi. I haven't eaten it before but I have been wanting to try sushi/sashimi since I was pregnant with my daughter.

The last few days my raw food has been seared steak raw on the inside.
ReddyMcMeaty

mine has always been yolks, in the last 4 days have been getting some raw steak in

For me, it was a gradual thing. I always thought sushi rolls were so pretty, and I tried them but had a california roll (nothing raw in there!) Then I slowly progressed to sushi (where it's raw fish strip of small amount of rice. I still felt way too stuffed, and when I started eating low carb/paleo/more carnivore, I made the leap to sashimi. A month or so ago I made the mistake of eating sushi (I ordered sashimi, but they gave me sushi, and I broke down and ate the rice with it) Sad Geez I was way too stuffed, and sooo constipated the next day (rice has always done that for me. excruciating painful constipation).

Anyway... I love raw salmon, raw white tuna, and I think yellow tail and snapper. I think those are pretty common ones.
fabshelly

Crab.
Jaybird

Yesterday, seared top sirloin. Yup

MMMM... never had raw crab... sounds lovely.

Yesterday I was a pig and had 22 pieces of sashimi at the local sushi joint. It is the only one that has sashimi as a lunch special, so I got two!
