Water fasting for gastritis

Ok, so after nearly 7 months of flare ups and burning stomach pains, I've just about had enough. Even meat and egging didn't help that much, well it got it under control somewhat but now I'm noticing I get flare ups after eating fat similar to the ones I used to get after eating carbs. It goes away for a week or two making me think I got rid of it, then it comes back with a vengeance like it has for the past 3 days.

So, I looked up some natural remedies for gastritis and a short water fast is one of them. They recommend 2-3 days for acute gastritis and longer for chronic (which I obviously have) so I don't know how long they mean but I'm just going to shoot for 5-7 days initially and see how I feel. At this point any loss in muscle mass is better than suffering for the rest of my life and I plan to start weight training back in full force once I resume eating. Also, gastritis is causing me to overeat to numb the pain and this HAS to stop because I CANNOT lose weight this way and its making me crazy...so I am finally resorting to my last resort (lol)..

I cannot handle getting a burning sensation lasting 8 hours after eating a mere 4 eggs or a chicken thigh. I thought smaller meals would help but the more frequently I eat, the more frequently I get pain.

So wish me luck, I'm posting this here for accountability because i tried this once before and convinced myself to stop the 2nd day... Sad

I'll be starting the rest of today, April 6th (since I ate this morning) and will try my best not to end it before friday April 11th.

Well, I don't know if anyone cares (lol) but heres an update anyway:

I ended up not starting until thursday (4/10) but I still going strong today, my 3rd day of water fasting. I also drinking herbal chamomille tea and chewing DGL (licorice) tablets to help out with the stomach pain (they are supposed to be good for ulcers). They are sugar free but have some sorbitol in them which makes me bloated  Sad but at least they work for the pain. I'm also taking L-glutamine (1 tbsp) per day.

I suspect my gastritis is also linked to Candida overgrowth, because i have nearly every other symptom. I hope this fast with help with that too because a zero carb diet still hasn't gotten rid of my candida.

Right now I'm feeling OK with regard to my stomach, no pain or anything, but man I am so bloated from the darn sorbitol in my DGL tablets. I wish they wouldn't put that in there, I don't care if it tasted like crap I'd still chew them because they work like a charm.

I also bought some betaine HCL for when I start eating again to help my digest my food, as I suspect low stomach acid (hence candida overgrowth) as being a reason for the chronic gastritis.

Ok thats all for now, I'm going to keep going strong until my stomach feels close to 100%  Happy

Hey Plat, hope all goes well and you manage to cure the gastritis.  I just asked DH about gastritis (he is a Dr) he said usually caused by irritating the stomach walls, usually the people who have it either ingested a lot of Alcohol, or  eat a lot of irritating spicy foods, or finally it can happen to people who overdose on some drugs (e.g. Aspirin or Iron tablets)

Have you had vomiting with blood in it (it should look dark brown vomit) ?

DH said the only way to cure it is to stop doing whatever caused it in the first place... it just heals as time goes by.

Anyway wishing you all the best with the fast.

Hey Sandydown, thanks for the comment. I used to take ibuprofen and aspirin all the time when I used to get headaches a lot (almost everyday). I also used to take it when I ran on the cross country team 2 years ago for when I'd get a pain in my leg. I know I took way too much and also drank a lot of caffeine as well, but I stopped all pain killers, caffeine, and stuff like that since last September (when I first got symptoms of it).

No vomiting at all for me, so I don't think there is bleeding down there but gastritis is what they told me when I got an EGD done about a month ago. I thought it was either gastritis or ulcer. It originally got a little better when i cut out carbohydrates, and then it started to hurt again no matter what I ate, but especially fat (like butter). So yeah, I guess stopping all food is stopping whats irritating it, but I can't do that forever so I hope it heals during this time.

Big Hug   Wishing you luck, and that this goes well for you and fixes something.  I know fasting is recommended for a lot of things,  I'd love to hear your updates and progress.

Yeh Plat, please keep updating us.

Perhaps you should try the MOVES diet (Google).

Thanks everyone! Happy You've helped out with my motivation. Today is day 4 for me. I checked the scale this morning just out of curiosity and it turns out I have an added bonus - I lost 3 lbs!  Happy (which doesn't seem like a lot after 84 hours a fasting but I have virtually no water weight to lose due to being on ZC prior to fasting).

Anyway, I'm still getting some dull burning pain even when I haven't eaten anything, but it isn't nearly as bad or severe as it was after eating.

Nicky - I looked up the MOVES diet, but it seems it was similar to what I was doing before fasting, except I wasn't eating veggies or coffee. But I was eating the meat, oils/fats, eggs, and butter and lemon juice (in my eggs).

Also, i've been doing a candida spit test every morning - where you spit in a glass of water and see if there are strings coming down from it (means you have candida) I know its really gross but does anyone know how accurate it is? So far nearly every morning mine has been pretty bad, although it used to form instantly but now it takes about 5-10 minutes to form the strings.

Wow, you haven't eaten in 4 days?! How long are you going to do this for?

For until my stomach feels better. I'm tired of living with this pain everyday. I haven't eaten anything in 4 days except for the 1st day I had 1 tbsp coconut oil for some extra energy, and today I had 1 tbsp coconut oil and 1 tbsp butter just now to see if my stomach will react (since it previously felt like a fire when I would eat butter). If it doesn't react I might try eating something solid today but if it does then...  Sad Right now it feels like its reacting...getting that hungry burning feeling a little bit.

I honestly don't know what to do if this doesn't work. I tried every way of eating and nothing doesn't give me pain, heck I even get some pain when fasting. I've been to 3 doctors, and a gastroenterologist, and no one seems know what is wrong. I have tried all the medicines and none work, (except betaine HCL which I will try once I eat solid food again). If I had a choice I wouldn't be fasting right now but I have gotten pretty desperate.

Does anyone know if candida prevent you/make it harder to lose weight? Because I was just thinking about it and 3 measly pounds in over 84 hours of fasting seems like not a lot...even if I was on ZC before, I'm still near my highest weight ever so it should be coming off faster, shouldn't it?

Oh Plat, may be you can gradually add some soups (broths)  ?  I think that would help you ?

Also have you tried live yogurt?  you can also add a tub to the broth and it tastes  nice I think.

Soup broth is good idea, thanks! I will try getting stuff to make that later today when i go to the store to pick up more tea. I was also thinking of buying some sea salt and seeing if it would help. I could add it to the soup.

I have tried plain yogurt with the live cultures but it actually seemed to make my stomach hurt worse. (I don't know why, maybe the small amount of lactose in it? I think I am lactose intolerant because my mom and brother are and I used to only drink Lactaid milk).

Hi there Plat,  how are things with you?   give us an update,  I hope you are able to eat some stuff now.
ReddyMcMeaty

3 lbs in 84 hours, if you were glycogen and water depleted already (not carbed up)  it sounds about right.  You could also be holding water or whatever... females are great that way  Roll Eyes   Remember, 1 lb is 3500 calories,  84 divided by 24 is 3.5, so  you're averaging a lb per day, 3500 calories per day is a VERY high metabolic rate.  So allow for some water, some fat, some muscle - you're going to lose lean protein on this, and you're on track.

Hey everyone, just to update, I fasted for 4 days only, and I'm eating again now. I'm using betaine HCL with each meal and it seems to be helping (actually if it weren't for betaine hcl I wouldnt be able to eat at all) but I do have to take a lot. Hopefully my body will start producing more acid naturally and soon I will get fully better.
Cool
