Television WatchingTelevision has been cited as an indirect contributor to obesity; we move around less whilst parked in front of the tube, plus eat unconsciously while doing so.
It may also contribute to depression and low self-esteem ~ thereby giving one further reason to reach for those all-encompassing Oreos, Rocky Roads & Doritos
Am planning on giving up this joyless pastime but not sure whether to go cold turkey or wean off it gradually. Have never been good at doing things halfway so probably the first scenario.
Wud very much like your views, personal struggles on the matter.

I voted 4 hours. I dunno.....I watch plenty of TV and I am not obese. Maybe it only applies to carb eaters.
What would most of us be doing if not watching TV? Read? Play a board game with our kids? Go shopping? Unless you would actually go and do some real exercise instead of watching TV, I don't see that it would make much difference.

Do rental movies count?
Who on earth could watch 7+ hours of television in a night?! Or 5, for that matter.

Same here. If I want to see any TV shows I just download them. The shows I watch (Lost and some other crap) are released on the web way before they reach Swedish television anyway.
I have about 10 channels.
I find that the less television I watch the more I hate the commercials (I guess when you watch alot your mind just blur out or something). Anti wrinkle creams and high fiber cereal over and over and over.

I don't have the TV on till the evening: news and things about actual life, talk shows, are what I like to watch. We all need time to relax and feed are head with information, impressions and ideas; your head needs enery too!

well, tv has been cited as an excellent means of population control, amongst other things. not say there are individuals who are not much affected by its effects..
i have that problem. when i sit down to watch time goes by so quickly..before i know it, i cud be fifty!!

dont u feel like ppl react differently to tv or other means of communication, just like with food?
there are sum things i just cannot watch because they r so terribly depressing. but not everyone shares this sentiment so perhaps theres something not objective with the way i view things?

I dunno... I've always liked tv. I've watched about the same amount when I was thinner or fatter.
I don't really buy that whole "TV rots your brain" idea.
I've seen some really interesting shows and I find it enriching. (LOST really makes you think and research. Also saw a couple of great documentaries on Houdini and the evolution of comic books and their impact on society the other day. Yes... I'm a huge nerd I know. )
I lovvvve to read, so television, reading, and the internet are the trifecta of my idle time (I daydream pretty constantly too, but I can do that while I work, so I don't count it as idle time ). Honestly though, I'm such an introvert, if I didn't have my alone time to muse, veg out (pardon the pun ), and revel in my small enjoyments... I think weight gain would be the least of my problems.

heh. az a kid, i loved tv too. perhaps there wasnt so much of it to watch back then, few channels and less television sets!!
Discovery and Animal Planet ain't too bad, over here. the real problem of course is shows that emphasize the negative inside a person *me included*
these may include certain gossip shows, cookie-cutter drama serials..its like we watch and watch and watch and dont get anything done. and yes, during the days of Britney i hate to admit i used to watch an UNgodly amount of mtv!
and bout alone time..im kinda split where oft ppl who meet me *or chat on here* find me extroverted but i really like my alone time and the prob is when i keep filling in the space with tv..it kinda leaves alot of projects undone
- that short story ive been meaning to write
- various novels, how-to manuals left largely untouched
- creativity seems to be drying up *which is the scariest part, for sure*
- less exercise and 'moving about' since its always "one more show to go"
whats trifecta
interesting word

Blaming obesity on watching TV ? Good one.
Maybe it's not TV it's just the fact that people are so fucking lazy. But TV sounds better.

BTW one of my girlfriends used to watch TV only on stationary bike. So it's only the question of the proper mindset.
The same applies to watching movies. You can go to cinema to watch the movie or to stuff yourself with popcorn. The choice is yours.

I think most places in the states are not set up for kids to be kids. Here, even kids who live in apartments, just go outside and run/play with a pack of kids until it's time to go to bed. The thing is, you can actually walk outside of your door and then walk or ride your bike around your apartment/house, or take one of the paths/walkways/sidewalks straight to the park or playground. The place is set up for foot and bike commuters. But, For example, one place I lived in in NY was extremely difficult and dangerous to go even 200 metres to the grocery store, or a restaurant. Playgrounds? What? I'd have to drive about 10 minutes, and I'd never let a kid under...11 walk from the house to get somewhere. So, depending on the age kids have to wait for their moms to take them outside, to make a playdate, or drive them somewhere in order to get out of the house. Oh... and don't bug her, sit down and watch a show and be quiet. I'm pretty certain if kids just could walk outside of their houses and in a short walk or bikeride be with their friends and be free to explore (oh yeah kids, don't go anywhere because you'll be kidnapped and molested!!) they'd really rather be playing than watching tv. Maybe they'd learn how to socialize too and not be terrified of each other as adults.
Never mind that tv. curbs creativity and social skills, and gives an unrealistic impression of human beings.
I can think of some things which might be healthier for adults to do instead of watching tv. I love to see a movie and think certain channels are great, so I'm not bashing tv.. but what about having a hobbie or something you enjoy doing? Or sitting on the balcony, or at a cafe/beergarden with some friends chatting?

anything that contributes to an in-active lifestyle can be vindicated, at least to some extent.
laziness is built in as an instinctual mechanism. ppl who are extremely active may not have been ideal candidates for survival where ancient genes came from.
point is, not everyone reacts to tv the same way, just as they dont react to carbs identically. in the words of Franco Columbu "if it makes you fat, stop eating it."

i agree with you on this one. however, being one of those individuals who can only do one thing at a time, i prefer not to disrespect either activity by focusing on neither fully.
and im not a fan of bike machines, not cuz theyre bad..just not my thing.
yes, it cud work. e'en a running machine while watching tv.
going to the movies i feel is kinda different. cuz its an event. but yes, there ARE similarities between the two, especially blurred with cable movies and a remote control..
its a question of personality. some people are the addictive type. some are not.

it just isnt safe to go outside anymore. in some places, not even for adults. i mean, is it really FUN to go outside and get accosted by drug dealers? not really.
u have all these sick ppl nowadays catching kids from playgrounds and stuff too. makes u wanna carry a club to babysit outdoors, honestly.
curbs creativity?? school does that too!
yes, i feel as though tv portrays things in an extremely unrealistic way, while trying to make it look 'real'.
thats the problem see, with things like Dungeons & Dragons, at least they dont try and say
"this is reality. this is how things ought to be."
theres an unwritten assumption that such gaming is at its core NOT to be taken seriously.
not so with reality tv, which is really the farthest thing from the truth there is. at least Lord of the Rings lets u learn something, imo.
i started playing scrabble with a best friend. sum ppl dun wanna play w/me cuz they think i'll win
and its a bit hard to swallow ur pride when ppl look at you and u KNOW they look at u like ur 12 or something, for playing an outdated, childish game.
who cares. planning to add chess and mebbe some other interesting game to the repertoire. but the games are very few and far between, and ive honestly gotten sick of spending my life *and that of my friends* watching tv w/blank stares, where the most stimulating thing is the running commentary!
and theres weights, but cant do that right now..anyways

good one. im lucky there wasnt much tv to watch when i was little.
Sesame Street was one of my faves, but i preferred cartoons.
funny thing is, i didnt always concentrate completely on the screen then. ive sorta learnt to to it 'better' as an adult.
the thing that gets me nowadays is many of the cartoons are made for adults. nothing wrong w/that, but it feels as though they try to be as cynical as possible. so ive cut most of them out, too.

the sad part is, sum of those fictional TV characters to my horror were taking up legitimate space in my brain and heart.
is it not insanity to have an image of a woman in mind long after you have switched off the screen
..but the scariest part is, i wasnt thinking of her as an object. i mean, having spent SO many freakin' hours @ the screen..she was slowly becoming
REAL???
thats when i said this has gotta friggin stop.
the ppl in our lives while perhaps not as picture perfect or dramatic as fiction characters have their own stories, their own thoughts, their own fears + joys. and the longer we zombie-fie ourselves the harder its gonna be to crawl out of the HOLE we dug ourselves into..
im finding it difficult to relate to real people.
i sh#t you not.
i mean, if it was bad before, its awful now.

I watch an hour a day on AVERAGE. Watching college basketball and football and the NBA is my weakness. I'm trying to work my way down to NONE. It's a MAJOR waste of time. I too spend most of my freetime on the internet. I watch anything I miss on T.V. on Youtube. If it has any significance, it'll be on Youtube.

and you can probably fast-forward the stuff on You Tube to whatevers really relevant. in that sense vcr *pre-recorded shows* could in theory save valuable time as you zap past the irritating commercials n stuff.

Carne I was actually thinking that after I read this thread... thinking what kind of problems that tv. can cause when a young person grows up with TELEVISION forming his or her images of people instead of real people. So the people you crush on, fantasize about, and "interact with" although only in your mind, are fictitious and unrealistic shallow images from tv instead of real world humans.
School does curb creativity, but there are options such as Waldorf. School is a whole other can of worms to open

but now theres more and more emphasis on REALITY TV and the advertistments just get more brainless by the minute
and yes, i do / did watch sum REALITY TV too.
..its like we're living in a quagmire of crap when switching on the Idiot Box.
