Sushi and Sashimi

I just had sushi and sashimi for the first time last night and I knew I would like it, but I absolutely loooooove it. I had fresh salmon, and tuna. Then a roll that had tuna, salmon, yellowtail, avocado, tempura flakes and caviar. It was called a scott roll, which we ordered again to split another one we liked it so much. Then we had some "dirty snapper", a snapper sashimi with lemon pepper sauce/marinade. I liked it so much I had dreams about sushi last night. I wish I could eat sushi every day! If I could afford it I would eat it at least once a week.

Wow! It took me a short while to become the royal sushi addict that I be. Well over twenty years ago I got my first fix Yup I just about never eat fish cooked anymore. There's such a big difference in taste with cooked and raw fish.

There are a lot of 'how to make sushi at home' websites. It's cheeper Wink

My love for sushi has been one of the key reasons I'm still a meat eater. Also that damn Buffalo tartar! Oh, and raw yolks! Yellow tail, Mackerel and Salmon roe are my favorites.

So is it safe to eat any fish raw? How do you prepare it?

I've made my own sushi loads of times. No Elena, it can't just be any fish - it has to be 'sashimi grade', which, I believe is fresher, higher quality and may have gone through a very short period in a flash freezer. Otherwise, you run the risk of parasites. I know some people eat regular fish raw, though. I guess it depends on the quality of the fish you're buying. If you have a good relationship with your fishmonger and buy from an actual fish market, rather than the grocery store, then you can just ask if it's OK raw when you buy.

I adore sushi - it's probably my favourite food - but the times I've tried sashimi on its own, I love the first few pieces and then I start not liking it anymore. The texture just gets very flabby and... just too much after a while. Unfortunately, the vinegared rice really makes the difference, for me, in terms of texture and without it, I just don't get the same enjoyment out of it. With the rice, I can eat a tonne of it, though. A big mouthful of raw fish with no accoutrements (I'm talking no pickled ginger, either, as it's carby) just doesn't give me the same satisfaction. Laugh

My favourites are the fatty tuna belly, yellowtail, salmon and unagi (bbq eel). I also love avocado with any of the above. Avocado is probably the vegetable/fruit I miss most on zero carb. It really is the 'meat' of the plant world. Or... the 'butter' of the plant world, rather. Mushrooms are moreso the 'meat'. I miss them too. Cry

Speaking of carbs, rice that is, sometimes I make a sushi bowl of food. Instead of making the glorious looking sushi pieces one by one, I'd just make the sushi rice, put in in a bowl with crumbled nori, and add bits of raw fish and mix it all up! A little soy and every bite tastes just like those fancy pieces, except they're not, heh heh.

And of course there are those that say parasites are our friends Wow Some gourmet delis/markets do sell 'sushi grade' fish so ask about, you never know. The more people ask, the more they'll carry it.

I am definitely going to check around now for some sushi/sashimi grade fish. There is a fish market not too far from here, as well as the Fresh Market.

I liked the sashimi almost as well as the sushi. I could eat a plate of sashimi still though, I really liked it. But that scott roll I had was awesome...just such a cool mix of taste and texture.

Sweet Lord, how did I miss this thread...
Sushi is probably the one and only food I would eat every day if I could... I just can't get burned out on it.
Especially some of the sushi places I went to in L.A. Heaven I tell ya!

Me too - it's my absolute favourite. Love
