Sledgehammers and sandbags

Anyone else use/tried them as exercise tools? Or am I the only one around here a bit left of center in that department? Laugh

Nice change from traditional weights and bodyweight workouts from time to time and great conditioning tools, imho.
ReddyMcMeaty

No I've been dying to for years though. We're just in a very public area and live in an apartment, but as soon as we have a yard..... I've only ever filled backpacks with weights.
BlackLabelSimian

I know what you mean. Space can definitely be a limiting factor for some. The upside is once you have the room, the expense is minimal. My sandbag is nothing more than one of my old military seabags. I just fill it up, secure the bag and throw some duct tape around the top opening for good measure. Only takes a few seconds to cut and re-tape if I need to add more weight.

And there's something very fun about getting your aggressions out via sledgehammer swinging. Laugh

Weights in a backpack is a great training tool as well. Multi-purpose indeed. Yup
cygnus

Yeah I use a pick or sledge hammer, I jut beat some soft dirt for an alloted amount of time..I will use mostly intervals while doing this do and I try and go as fast as possible.

My heart is usually jumping through my skin
BlackLabelSimian

I'd like to get a big tire to beat on eventually instead of just beating on the ground, but it's a great workout nonetheless.
teknodamage

I've been wanting to do this ever since I saw a video of Fedor Emelianenko training.
BlackLabelSimian

I saw that vid as well. Cool stuff.

Ever been to www.rosstraining.com ? Ross does some really cool stuff fitness-wise.
Avalon

Is sand cheap? Hey I'm in Florida! Bonkers Am I allowed to steal sand, I mean borrow sand? Hmmm, I need a pair of 5lb weights. Avalon looks around the room for a matching pair of something... spies cat, need one more hmmm Plastic jars or water bottles! Water bottles, so cool. Hell then I could just use the water then??? Water's easy and dries well...

Speaking of water...A couple water jugs (i.e. like the Poland Spring type used in workplace water coolers) are great to use as improvised lifting implements. You can do all kinds of lifts with them. Farmers walks, etc.

Yep. I've done some car pushing before. Sometimes intentionally and sometimes *ahem* out of neccessity. I got that idea from strongman comps and Brooks Kubik.

And yes, Avalon, along with all the other ladies here, is quite stunning indeed. Grin

No problemo. I learned about Ross' site a long time ago and love his articles and no bullshit attitude.
Eventually, I am going to order some of his books. If I am not mistaken, he also resides somewhat in my area. I'd love to train with him a few times. Maybe someday when my wallet isn't so light. lol

Another cool site is Bryce Lane's here's the link to that one:
http://www.ironsports.tv/
I sometimes post on his message board, but usually I just shut up, read and try to learn. Laugh
cygnus

Damn, Ross is hard as fricking nails!! One of the hardest dudes I have ever seen.

Looks like a more buff Pavel!
BlackLabelSimian

He is indeed. A motivating sight, for sure.
teknodamage

oh hell yeah, I've been to Ross' site before... he ain't no joke, that's for sure! I'm more into straight up bodybuilding/powerlifting... eventually I'd like to branch out and be more active in other areas. I'd like to get back into martial arts... unfortunately years ago I had to stop because of a knee injury and I just never got back with it.
BlackLabelSimian

Similar situation here. I hurt my knee ages ago trying to water ski and I dropped my martial arts classes and just never got back into it when I was better.
I've been using a deadlift singles routine like Steve Justa's that I read about online and that's been pretty cool so far. I'm about 2 weeks into it. I might try it with squats when I finish the deadlift cycle.
I've modded it slightly to fit my needs and schedule and also been doing lots of dips and such to supplement it.
If you're into lifting, www.powerandbulk.com is a cool site as well. Lots of cool info on their forums.
Avalon

I didn't realize there were new posts here! Cygnus and Simian! We Thank you! especially considering our history Cool ...But it's an older pic now. I'm losing track, but I think '99- 1899 Grin

This is how I look now:

Kissems?
BlackLabelSimian

You can't fool us...We know you're a hottie. Wink
ReddyMcMeaty

Nice try.. I'm just waiting on that belly pic coming in tomorrow!

Hey it looks like we'll be getting some sandbags REALLY soon! Woohoo! Not for outside unfortunately, or even for a large area, but they're a lot safer to have lying around when there is a baby and a toddler in the house and we're trying to work out in their midst. My toddler is obsessed (and has been since even before he walked) with my barbells and dumbells.. I ended up putting them all into the basement this pregnancy and right now he loves to pick up and carry and throw a 5 lb purple sand ball Laugh so I'll definitely have to have baby sand bags to go along with the mummy and the papa sandbags.

That's awesome! If that's any indication, your little robust baby will turn into a big healthy muscular man!
BlackLabelSimian

My daughter loves working out and weight equipment, etc. She's 8 years old and he dediction to training is almost baffling in some ways.
She actually calls me to tell me about workouts and to see when she and I will work out together. lol
She also competes in wrestling at the Boys and Girls Club and beats the crap outta most of the boys. Even older ones. lmao
ReddyMcMeaty

I love the natural form that tiny kids have when picking up heavy things, it's such a pleasure to watch them. So many adults are stiff and awkward and don't know how to use their bodies properly.
BlackLabelSimian

I think that is why as much as I love "regular" weightlifting, odd object lifting kinda brings us back to that place and teaches us to use our bodies functionally.
ReddyMcMeaty

I like this video too.
