Question for runners/joggersHey guys,
I just started jogging and I'm wondering about something. 1) What causes you to get a stitch in your side, 2) does it ever go away and 3) how do you prevent them?? It's the only thing keeping me from going further right now. My legs feel great, my lungs are even OK and could go longer, but after a few minutes I get that searing pain in my side and I have to slow down to a crawl. After walking for a minute, I try again, but the pain comes back more quickly every time I try. I'm really enjoying jogging and it feels great otherwise.
Any help is appreciated!

Here's some tips on side stitches:

I have heard that side stitches are diaphragmatic in origin. You should stop running as soon as you feel it. It's a muscle cramp in the diaphragmatic area, just the way your calf muscles might cramp up if you strain them too hard. It usually happens to new joggers. Keep us posted.

Hi Red,
This happens quite frequently to new runners.
It will go away once your body begins to acclimate itself to a regular running routine. In my view, if the pain doesn't go away in about 3 or 4 minutes, you should stop.
For me, I've found that stretching after a run (never before!) will elminated the stitching issue for many during their next runs. Never stretch before a run, but walk into it.
Good luck!

If I don't stretch thoroughly before running, I feel all tight and get a stitch. I spend a good 15-30 minutes stretching/yoga before I go running. I leave an hour between my last drink and excersise.
How's your running going?
