Protein ShakesAnyone do a protein shake before or after a workout, and if so, do you mix your own or do you buy a blend?
I just experimented with whey protein last night for the first time since going zero-carb. I did a full body HIT workout, at home (I hadn't worked out in months) and had severe shakes and muscle weakness afterwards. I felt good, but could hardly get my arms working well enough to open the tub! My fingers were useless and my knees were wobbling all over the place. I mixed a shake with water, ice cubes and cream and my body absorbed the whey so quickly, I felt fine in 10 minutes. Similar to having sugar, but there was no crash afterwards. I did feel absolutely starving again within about 90 minutes, though. I might mix it with egg protein next time (if I can find it), some calcium caseinate (just ordered some off the web), and maybe some extra fat in order to make it absorb a little more slowly, as I don't like the idea of anything being soaked up quite that efficiently!
It did work wonders for my recovery after the workout, though. And a much better option to having a carb-up.
Does anyone have a specific protein shake recipe they'd like to share?

Why not just stir in a yolk? And was your cream pasteurized? How do you feel about raw cream? It's difficult and expensive for me to get anything other than cheese raw, and I really wonder if the Pottinger Cat tests and other testimonials should scare us away from anything Pasteurized.

I would probably add a couple of yolks, but I don't want to go overboard, as the cream already has carbs and at least the egg protein is just the protein and doesn't have any carbs at all. This is probably a screwy way to think and I should just use yolks, now that I give it some thought. Real food is always better.
I can't get raw cream here - it's illegal to sell raw dairy in Canada (except a few imported raw cheeses that, for some reason, are exempt). If I had a choice, I'd go raw cream, for sure! I have a feeling I'd tolerate it much better, as sometimes I've found I can react to dairy with lots of cravings.

Not sure I've ever had raw cream... does it taste different and how long does it keep? Does anyone in the South (Charlotte, NC) know if it's available here?

It's not a bad idea to wait an hour after your shake to go ahead and eat a meal if you're getting hungry. Also, check out other brands of protein powder... there's all kinds like egg powder and what not as well as different blends... check out Biotest's Lowcarb Grow.

I found a dairy in Calif and their cows are grass fed and a 1/2 gallon of raw cream is $34 friggin dollars,plus shipping!!! Can you believe it?
Trader Joes has a nice one that is only pasteurized and not homogenized.

Their business is hurting and I've been hearing some grumblings that they may rethink their pricing strategy.
trader Joes has the best eggs available and the best non-raw cream at excellent prices.

I love going to Whole Foods, but, you're right... it costs a fortune there. I enjoy the taste of grassfed beef and so far, Whole Foods is the only place I can get it aside from online.

I guess there's no good protein shake unless you can have dairy, too. Caseinate... whey... needless to say, soy protein is no good. I'm not dairy free right now, but have been considering it again lately, as I've been really really good the last two weeks and I'm barely losing the weight I put on over Christmas. It's coming off slow (like 1 lb./week).
I guess a big glass of raw eggs it is... barf.

blend up some raw liver, steak and water and don't eat anything until you've finished it. Either you'll lose weight from not eating or you'll have a great shake.

I have a pure egg-white protein that I ordered a while back. It is all-natural, nothing but pure egg whites in a powdered form. You could add anything you want to it. Their home page is www.roseacre.com The price per serving is really good, and you get enough to last about 3 months, if you had a shake every day.

Have you done this? I've wondered about how a steak might blend. The liver i couldn't do. Blend the Steak! with water and an egg? Should it be plain, sweetened or salty?

I did do it, but not in a protein shake style.. once I did raw liver and kidneys and onion, I was trying to make a pate and it was so gross!! Not the flavour but the glibberiness. The other purees I've done with meat have pretty much been for the baby, if I flavour them at all, which I usually don't need to do unless I add potato, I use an additive free boullion or use homemade stock. That is actually a great idea, I was kind of kidding around but honestly I can see myself doing this. Another experiment for this coming week. Quick meat shakes. If you make it warm btw. you can add fat to it! And if the meat is raw it will blend up so much more easily. I used to make (why do I never remember this when I'm meal planning????) a DELICIOUS raw soup of raw tomatoes, egg yolk, and raw meat in the blender, I flvoured it with tabasco and worsteshire sauce and added grated raw sharp cheddar cheese omg that was so good. It would make a nice shake I think, but it is a more pleasant experience to eat it with a spoon. Ok we need to start a thread in the recipe section called blender food.

I have never been a fan of 100% whey powder. I stick to the protein blends as they stay in your system longer. Finding a low carb blend can be difficult though. As was mentioned earlier, low carb grow is good, although you don't get much for the price. I like AtLarge Nutrition's nitrean just as much as grow and you get about 3 times the protein for $10 more. I just add a little coconut oil and chug her down after a workout. I know I couldn't stomach anything else for at least 2 hours after a hard workout.

My shake cocktailI don't know why I took a break from this, it was working really well, but a bit pricey...
I generally eat once a day, so I actually eat usually eat before my workout, and have my usual tartare (these days preceded by 1 stick of melted organic butter), and then with my supplements pound a shake with whey isolate (0 carbs), micellar casein (0) carbs, and bovine serum (0 carbs), the last one is a bit pricey but it was working well for me...

I am so goddamn lazy about mixing up powders of any kind (protein, creatine, etc), that I rarely do it.
It just always seems like a monumental pain in the ass for some reason.
Give me creatine in a capsule form and dessicted liver tablets and I'll take those religiously. But making a shake/drink? Rarely stick with it.

Never heard of it.
There is a goat milk protein made by VyoTech that is allegedly decent.
Last protein powder I bought was Muscle Milk. Tastes awesome, but probably too many carbs for most here.

I'm considering some kind of protein powder right... perhaps egg protein or an egg/whey mix. I'm just trying to find the best bang for my buck that's the lowest possible in carbs.
This week I'm getting started on desiccated liver tabs along with some bcaa's.
For those who have experience with liver tabs, what amount would you recommend? I know Vince Gironda recommended something like 5 tabs every 2-3 hours... but I think I'll test the waters before I go that far.

man, I've been taking those liver pills for a couple days now.... I'm really surprised at how much energy I've got, and it's clean energy not like a stimulant. They don't bother me one bit so I went ahead and up'ed my dosage to 4 tabs every 3 hours or so. Hands up to old school bodybuilding supplements!

Just a really good source of easy protein and b vitamins. Good for anyone, really. Hell, when I was very ill for a spell, they were about the only thing I could keep in my stomach. Probably kept me alive, belive it or not.
And yeah...The old school guys knew their shit depsite the assumption that they were "primative".

Carlsons has a dessicated Buffalo liver tab..
I had some real great feedback from some of my customers who took it.
You don't have to take as much as regular dlvtabsa.
I think there is a powder floating around as well.

yeah, what Simian said. Another interesting thing is it contains cytochrome P-450, a protein enzyme that is involved in steroid production and detoxification... and so besides all the other things, it builds up your immune system and it also increases your red blood cell count so it's a blood builder.
