Pemmican

Here is a good explanation on making pemmican, with pictures as well. They show you how to dry meat in your oven. I would suggest leaving your oven door cracked open to ensure the meat is more dried than cooked. Of course you can also dry the meat in a dehydrator if you have one. There is another way to dry meat....using a fan, and a/c filters. I haven't tried it yet, but will let you all know when I do and how it goes. It dries the meat without heating it up so that's a plus.

Note: It says to set oven to 200, but if yours goes lower set it as low as it can be set.

I absolutely love pemmican. It's about time I made some. If anyone has recipes or tips to share, feel free Smile

Wow, thanks for the link, April. For the first time I feel like that's something I can manage to do!

I also took a look at the vegetarian pemmican.... Laugh I have a sneaking suspicion which one I'll be sticking with Wink.

Vegetarian pemmican? That is disgusting.. I don't even want to look.
Unless... nuts and coconut oil go well together...as do dessicated coconut and coconut oil.

April would you mind posting your chicken/coconut pemmican recipe? I think it's a great one.

edit: oh duh, this is in the red meat section.. oh well, it's still pemmican.. it can be in this thread.

I tried making my own jerky, but just kept getting paranoid that my hydro bill was going to be through the roof for keeping my oven on for 6 to 8 hours. Laugh I think I'll buy a dehydrator - I'm sure it uses way less energy.

Or you could try it this way:

I'm going to try it soon.

yeah I want a dehydrator too, I'm sure they're not too expensive. I've done jerky with a fan before though, it's only a pain if you have a baby around who is very interested in your setup.
