Naysayer Time Magazine and Me

I'm amazed at where I am in my life right now. Not in the horror of human personal problems, but in the fact that I could be thinking Vegetarian/Vegan thoughts in any way shape or Green Smoothie. I'm well aware that in the years to come if we are still eating meat and the planet hasn't exploded, I could very well shift back...

Anyway, came across this article from Time Magazine. Nothing new really, just that I'm feeling a little Naysayerish at the moment. And no, I'm not drinking!  Roll Eyes And yes, I think this is coming and the Planet needs our help.

Quote:
By covering more and more of the planet with our cities, farms and waste, we have jeopardized other top predators that need space as well. Tigers and panthers are being squeezed out and may not last the coming century. We, at least, have the flexibility--the omnivorous stomach and creative brain--to adapt. We can do it by moving down the food chain: eating foods that use less water and land, and that pollute far less, than cows and pigs do. In the long run, we can lose our memory of eating animals, and we will discover the intrinsic satisfactions of a diverse plant-based diet, as millions of people already have.

I'm not predicting the end of all meat eating. Decades from now, cattle will still be raised, perhaps in patches of natural rangeland, for people inclined to eat and able to afford a porterhouse, while others will make exceptions in ceremonial meals on special days like Thanksgiving, which link us ritually to our evolutionary and cultural past. But the era of mass-produced animal flesh, and its unsustainable costs to human and environmental health, should be over before the next century is out.

Agriculture, and over population becuase of the masses that can be kept alive with the crap produced, is the danger to the planet.  Not meat.   Nature has a natural cycle of population control, animals eat plants, animals eat animals, and bigger animals eat smaller animals....  we messed with that when we started farming the way we do.

I'm not typically excited about linking to this particular forum, but there's an excellent thread on this subject already with lots of interesting links that Tracy (Waywardsister) started at ALC.

Thanx for the link Red! Good healthy banter that goes nowhere fast.

I trust my instincts. After all I Loved  Star Trek, Monty Python, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Donnie Darko... just about every Fantasy filled cultural hit  Shock and I tell you now, there will be a shift in years to come towards a plant based diet, possibly forced on the population by our Governments and meat, as was mentioned in the article will remain for the Rich or for Special Occasions.

Maybe not today. Maybe not tomorrow. But our lives will be worth a hill of beans for that's what we'll be eating, Beans  Grin

Predicting the future is difficult, but I would venture to agree with Avalon. As the cost of plant food continues to rise, the cost of meat will go up even more, which means fewer people will be able to afford it, which means they will be forced to each less expensive food, such as beans and rice.

Around here, there is a lot of complaining going on about the rise in the cost of feed for the animals. Apparently my company had a $300 million dollar increase in the cost of feed last year, and it looks like it will only go up from there, unless we give up on food-based fuel. I doubt that will happen.
