Long chain fats reduce calorie intake

http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/articlerender.fcgi?artid=1727908

According to this study, only long chain fats reduce calorie intake as compared with medium chain. I thought medium chains were superior fats - like butter and coconut oil.. thoughts?

Also, this contradicts with another site mentioning that monos (long chain fats) are more easily stored as fat than short chain.

It's a study about the effect of long-chain fatty acids on hunger. It has nothing to do with their caloric content by themselves, but about how they might induce a greater degree of satiety once they are digested and they do so by acting on cholecystokinin (an hormone that suppress appetite) receptors. This mean that the fat induces satiety before it is absorbed in the blood. According to the study, short chain fatty acids had no effect on appetite.

Fat in general contains 9 calories per gram, but this is an average: long chains have more, shorter chains have less.

The study says nothing about fat storage.

yeah i guess you're right. I just always thought long chains were to be avoided but looks like they are beneficial in helping restrict calories.

This study directly contradicts the one above, saying that MCT's produce better satiety than LCT's.

And calories don't matter. It's all about insulin and carbs.

Fat won't get stored when insulin/carbs are low to very low. Sometimes, things like dairy, artificial sweeteners or salt may prevent optimal weight loss.

really? because I ate a ton of calories of meat, eggs, and butter only the other day and gained.  Sad Unfortunately, I think they matter for me. I'm trying to look for things to help out because my appetite in insatiable and I was miserable hungry today  Cry

How long do you generally go without eating between meals Opticon?

lately I've been eating twice a day, I used to eat once a day but the hunger got too much for me. So I eat lunch around 11:00-12:00 and dinner around 5:00-6:00 pm. The problem with me is that eating more often makes me hungry more often. I've tried eating 3 meals a day and eating breakfast automatically makes me ravenous. Also has to do with my acid reflux since eating makes me feel like I have really painful hunger pains. Its sorta like, damned if I do but damned if i dont type of thing.  Sad

check out the fat gain on zero carb thread.. there is more to it than just "zero carb means no fat gain, ever"

Opticon,

Eggs=carbs, how many eggs did you eat that day? Egg yolk or full egg?

Butter may stall some people in their quest to lose weight. Dairy is a problem for some. If it contains salt, even more so.

Organ meats, especially liver also contain carbs.

Any sauces, dressings, spices? Carbs add up.

So you're saying it has to be like meat only? I ate 4 whole eggs that day, 8 yolks, 10 tbsp butter, 1 lb steak and 1.5 lbs chicken thighs...(yeah I know..but the reflux/ulcer/gastritis pain in my stomach keeps burning until its completely full  Sad )

ALso, is coconut oil better to use than butter? I always thought butter was good because of the CLA content (I get organic). I can't get animal fats at the store, even the lard they sell is partially hydrogenated...  Sad

Actually a few people on here have found eggs to be the key to their weightloss!    Also, coconut oil is very high in chemicals... which some people can't deal with.  Butter is wonderful, but other people (me) can't handle butter.
adwred

It's not so much about 'bad' and 'good'. It's about what's right for you. Carnation can lose loads of weight sipping butter, but butter does nothing for me for weight loss and Meg can't even have it at all. It just takes some experimentation to figure things out.
Kristi31

What adwred said. Try different things and see what works best for you. I was just giving you ideas, suggestions. You will eventually know.
TRIAL AND ERROR. I definetly know what THAT is!
opticon107

thanks everyone. I think once I get this gastric problem under control I will better able to tell what my true appetite is and what foods affect it. The main reason I am overeating is to comfort and soothe the burning pangs I get.
