like sushi? It's not a substitute, but an idea
Thinly sliced raw red meat marinated in soy sauce
Sliced avocado
Pickled ginger
sesame seeds
Arrange the slices on a plate so that each piece of meat has a slice of avocado on top of it, and then a piece of ginger on top of that. If you're fancy then you can actually wrap the slice of meat around both and fasten somehow at the top. Sprinkle sesame seeds over top.
This looks really nice, my friends who were NOT raw meat eaters (they actually eat things like <cough> tofu burgers and stuff) wanted to try it because of the looks and to them it tasted good.
There are so many variations of this: raw ground beef wrapped in nori and dipped as a "dumpling" into sauce, wrapped into rolls with some sliced veggies etc. It's good with cooked ground beef as well.
Wanted to add it's a good intro for people who are squeamish about eating raw meat but are interested in the concept because the texture is so nice.

Wow, great idea Reddy. Isn't it weird how our culture has finally become ok with sushi but the same people who adore eating that will freak at the idea of raw meat? Myself included of course! I am working up to it, slowly... But I keep reminding myself that I didn't touch sushi until I was 21, and then had to start with the stuff that had 'disguised' raw fish in it. Now it's my favourite food and I eat nothing but sashimi when we have it. I joke that they should just bring me the fish, no need for all that fancy slicing!
I just posted in my journal about my first 'medium-rare' experience. I could not believe for SWEET the pink of the meat tasted. It was incredible. Totally not what I imagined - but the same was true of raw fish when I first tried it. It's not fishy, it's flavourful and somewhat sweet also.
My only mental hang up now with raw meat is the bacteria thing, since you can't go and buy sashimi grade beef as such. I've read suggestions of slicing off the edge, or just quick-searing it though of course. I'm just gonna have to get rarer and rarer. I reckon I could be there in a week or two because that pink steak was so freaking good!!!

actually, I've had gyo sashimi - or beef sashimi - at one of my favorite Japanese places. very similar to what you describe, with soy and a little sesame oil. Now that I think of it I need to go there again...

Last week while at a New York City Salad bar, there were two new bins of food- that I'd never seen before... RAW Slices of Beef and Chicken. I don't know if these could be fried on-site or not, But I suppose you could just stack up and munch out at the office, with door closed of course. Or not!

Raw horse meat is also served in Japan - basashi. And raw whale meat, another mammal...
