Jerky ideaHey, gang. I was rummaging through my freezer yesterday, questing for candidates for my compulsive jerky-making activities. I found a box of those sandwich steak thingies. You know the stuff...the super thin steaks (well, they look like finely minced up raw beef that is then extruded in super-thin sheets and chopped into 'steaks') that one fries up for philly-steak style sandwiches.
So, I looked at it and thought, why not? I looked at the ingredient list - they were allegedly ALL BEEF.
So, I brought the box into the kitchen and broke the 'steaks' up into small bits, put them on the dehydrator trays, sprinkled with spices, and dried away.
Not bad. The end product is very crispy, crumbly, and a little oily/greasy They actually still taste a bit like the original steaks - which I was surprised at, since jerky generally just tastes like whatever spices I sling on the raw bits.
The cool thing about using these 'steaks' was that it was FAST to prep. The steaks are so thin, you can easily break them up in bits rapidly, instead of laboriously slicing half frozen meat into the thinnest possible slice you can get without injuring the fingers.
I know, probably not the best quality beef in the world - after all, it was frozen. But an interesting process, all in all...just had to report in on it.

Great idea! Also, you can make beef jerkey using ground beef and spices too. A coworker made some and brought it in, and I thought it was very good. I think you get a "jerkey gun" when you do this.
