I'm Sorry It's Me AgainI'm sorry. Please forgive me. Spank me if you'd like
You don't even have to go to this link. I'm writing this because very often when googling diets, you rarely maybe never find a diet site in a nice layout and 'free' for all to find. I have to give Dr. McDougall credit here. I've owned one of his books for a while, picked it up at a thrift store I think for 50 cents. But I landed on his web page this morning and he's got his whole plan right there to read.
In a world of commecialization, and where nothing is 'FREE' this was a welcommed sight.

Wow. His diet is pure sugar. I think most people here will look at that diet and consider it totally devoid of proper nutrition, but you may disagree. If you do decide to try it... well... good luck with that. I'll do a dance of diabetes-protection in your honour.

You Naysayer
The testimonials on that site are wonderful. With before and after pictures of course
Here's the thing- Oh nevermind
The funny thing is I'm waiting on this book that stresses Greens over starches, and McDougall stresses starches over greens. DOHHH!!! At least he says, if you do the diet for more than 3 years, take B12... maybe the lawyers told him to write that heh heh.

Is this not a great way to pick up a Meat eater at a bar?

| Quote: | | High protein diets are popular in part because they are easy to learn and follow: Buy a burger anywhere—throw away the bun, scrape off the ketchup and you are now on a diet that gives immediate weight loss. The working mechanism for this diet is to make you sick by feeding you an unbalanced diet solely of fat and protein, causing fluid loss and appetite suppression. Over the long course this form of malnutrition causes your arteries to rot, your bones to be urinated into the toilet, your bowels to ache from plugged-up defecation, and your body to smell like the stock-yards you pass while driving down highway 5 (from San Francisco to Los Angeles). |
THE STOCK-YARDS YOU PASS WHILE DRIVING DOWN HIGHWAY 5!!!

Knock yourself out, avalon. Really. McDougall is as lame as they come.
Stressing greens over starches - you must be talking about Fuhrman and "Eat to Live." Another quack with another quacked up diet. If you can handle the primary source of your calories coming from salads and beans, well, good luck. Doesn't sound healthy to me, though. That amount of fiber can't be a good idea.

Fibre is only one part of why this diet is so inadequate and harmful, IMO.

I agree with you, eggy. The downsides of veganism are so numerous, and the fiber part of it isn't the worst on the list of negatives.

Meat and animal products are fully and easily digested by us for the most part, plants are not, is it that big of a question? In some people who have eschewed meat for long enough their HCl levels might be low, and others might have gallbladder issues so fats are not fully absorbed, but IMO that is nothing to the gas and putrefaction that vegetable fiber causes. I'm not saying fibre is the absolute worst thing on earth, just that decaying undigested plant matter is really disgusting; load up on fibre and tell me if you emit wonderful fresh smelling gas.

I'm thinking it may be the biggest question of all.

| Quote: | | The human intestine is long and coiled, much like that of apes, cows, and horses. This configuration makes digestion slow, allowing time to break down and absorb the nutrients from plant food sources. The intestine of a carnivore, like a cat, is short, straight, and tubular. This allows for very rapid digestion of flesh and excretion of the remnants quickly before they putrefy (rot). There are also marked sacculations (many sac-like enlargements that bulge out along our large intestine), like those found in all apes, which strongly supports the view that we are primarily plant-eating animals. Overall, the intestines of meat-eaters are noticeably simpler than ours. |
Now, with evolution, say we have adapted to eat a bit more meat than a chimp, still, I find myself leaning back to Hans Dehmelt or the Hunza, where meat is only a small part of our diet.

Ava, if that is the way you're leaning then what's the big deal? You could put a thousand convincing sounding vegetarian articles in front of me, and after reading them I'd still believe that mostly meat was best for me, and probably a large percentage of the population. The Bear could turn around and say haha! I was kidding! My whole thread was a joke.. and I'd still believe it based on my own experience and others who have experienced similar things. Sure vegans will have testimonials but I dismiss them... bad me. If you truly feel best with meat being only a small portion of your diet the diet police will not visit you and handcuff you and forcefeed you pork belly, but we will be happy here that you feel good with what you're doing. I just don't think that you're going to persuade "tried and true" meat eaters that it's bad with a bunch of vegetarian propaganda.

Meg, I don't think I have been trying to convert anyone, except perhaps, to figure out my own way.
By having Naysayers & Contrarians, I thought that I'd be able to voice my own concerns and I have welcomed information on the subject. I appreciate serious banter.
Wow, now I feel kind of sad
I'm sorry if I've pushed this on anyone.

Well, you're not pushing it on me. You couldn't pay me enough to eat a vegan diet. I think it's bunk.
People are turning away from high carbs, avalon. Taubes' book will be out soon, and I hear he'll be cleaning the clocks of the high-carb low-fat promoters. Willett at Harvard of plant oil/grains fame is now saying we should eat more fat and less carbs.
Veganism is not scientifically proven to "prevent" anything in terms of disease states. It was a politically motivated issue that became embedded in the culture. Now we've got "Eat 5 a Day" as our "slogan" for good health, with no evidence whatsoever that eating 5 fruits and veggies per day is beneficial.
Damn shame.

Ava, I'm sorry for being dismissive of your concerns and making you feel bad. Not only did I express myself badly, I misinterpreted your intent, which was not "Hey meat eaters LOOK! You shouldn't be eating so" but asking questions for your own quest. I feel pretty certain that I've found at least the general idea of my food WOL, and you are very welcome to post about looking for yours... please don't feel like you're not.
