Histidine, histamine and methionine: animal protein

Although fish and meat (especially aged) contain much histidine that converts to histamine (a potential trigger of allergies in susceptible individuals), they also contain much methionine which helps breakdown histamine so that there is less of a chance that histamine may cause problems.

I found that out after researching through the Web. Thought it was interesting.

Does that mean that a steak would be better than Benadryl?

Never thought of that...

Try and see. Let us know.

Yes, it's true. Which is why healthy people who are not particularly sensitive to amines and have a healthy methylation cycle have no trouble with aged meat. But many people who are sensitive to the amines in meat or who create excess histamine from certain foods have a mutated methylation cycle which causes them to be extremely deficient in the cofactors that are needed for the histamine to be broken down. I wish I understood it all better. It's very complicated and, unfortunately, it's not as simple as: methionine breaks down histamine, end of story.
