HIIT

I read up on HIIT and decided to try it. On my stationary bike I warm up for two minutes, then haul ass as fast as I can for one minute. Then two minutes rest followed by one minute intensity. I do this for 15-17 minutes.

I've only done it twice, but each time I was wore out afterwards, plus much sweat. My normal routine is basic tae-bo four times a week. The tae-bo lasts for about 28 minutes including a warm up and cool down. My question to those here who might can help, is could I replace the four sessions of tae-bo with three sessions of HIIT? Would it at least be equivalent?

My guess is that you could replace it, 3 sessions of HIIT is a lot and will be a big hit to your lower body muscles. The only thing, if you are concerned, is that stationary bike does not use all of the same muscles as Tae Bo... so if you want to use the other muscles as well you'll have to do something different. From a metabolic hit though, I would say that you're doing more work in 3 sessions of HIIT than 4 of TB.

Thanks for replying. Actually, I also do a dumbell workout twice a week, so my arms and shoulders are getting some work. Maybe I could skip the thighs/calves work I do with the weights since I would be working them on the bike. I really don't want "bulk"; I just want to be slender with some nice muscle for vanity.

It certainly felt like I had worked harder with the HIIT; I was really wiped afterwards.

Considering your goals you could definitely skip the thigh and calf work. Depending on your body type and nutrition, and of course how hard you work, HIIT can build some nice muscle.

Now I'm not so sure about this. I've had a very slight intermident headache for the past couple of days, and I'm thinking it might be from the HIIT.

try hydrating

I did fifteen minutes of HIIT again on Monday, and the same thing; a low-level headache around my forehead that comes and goes. Even three days later. Maybe I should ask my doctor if I should keep doing this. I would hate to have to stop, because I like doing it. (It was pretty intense Monday; I warmed up for a minute and then did 30seconds intense/30seconds rest for about 13 minutes. I was totally wiped for the rest of the day.)

Maybe it is elevating your blood pressure?

Try 15 secs and 15 seconds or do the 1 minute high and 2 minute cool down recommended by Alwyn Cosgrove.

The doctor said it might be a virus; my blood pressure wasn't high enough for a headache (of that nature). Although, its still to high; 134/82 is in the normal range, but still at the higher end of normal. I do get skeered in the doctor's office though.....
