GlutamineI've been a big proponent in the past, but came upon this while doing some reading on MSG.
http://www.mercola.com/2004/may/1/glutamine.htm
Was wondering who here takes the glutamine supplementation and what, if any, side effects you've noticed? I haven't noticed any ill effects, as a matter of fact I felt that it negated my alcohol and carb cravings, also helped subdue hypoglycemia; but that may have been placebo effect, I have great imagination
This guy says the opposite, that neurons in the brain convert glutamine to glutamate, which would not be a good thing, for any of us!

I wish there was something one could test food with in restaurants, like drops you could put on a corner of your steak to show a reaction if it had MSG on it. It frustrates me to no end that I can't eat out, even seemingly plain, unprocessed food items, and not trust that it will not have MSG in some form on/in it.
Fast food is definitely out, they all use it in some form or other. I haven't eaten at a FF restaurant in quite a while. I'm talking about other chains though, like Olive Garden or Applebees, etc. I think the competition is so great, they see themselves forced to use these additives to up the addictive quality of their food.
There are few places that I haven't been bloated and retaining water for days after eating there. What to do?

Barb, the problem also isn't just with mono sodium glutamate, but with any free glutamates, which are in practically everything. Even your steak has free glutamates - it's just that they are in an amount you can handle. But tomato sauce, soy sauce, beef broth (canned or homemade - doesn't matter, although the canned and bouillon usually have more added in, just for kicks), mushrooms, any bottled sauce or condiment... they're all loaded with free glutamates. I couldn't even begin to list all the names MSG goes under. Anything 'hydrolyzed', 'modified', 'flavours', 'spices' are MSG. I wouldn't bother eating in a restaurant at all unless you're prepared to ask for plain, unsalted, unadulterated meat and plain greens with a bottle of oil and lemon juice to accompany it. I actually ate at a mongolian grill place where you choose your own meat, veg and sauce and I asked for no sauce at all (and they listened - I watched them cook it) and just being cooked on the same grill as all the other MSG-laden food, I had a huge reaction for days afterwards.
