Glucose Tolerance Tests

Don't ever let them give you a glucose tolerance test. It will most likely show that you are diabetic whether you are or not.

Re ending a ketogenic diet : During carbohydrate refeeding, the body upregulates levels of these enzymes but there is a delay during which the body may have difficulty storing and utilizing dietary carbohydrates. This delay is approximately five hours to upregulate liver enzyme levels and from 24-48 hours in muscle tissue.
Lyle McDonald, The Ketogenic Diet , 72

You may even show sugar in your urine.

Starvation Diabetes: After prolonged fasting, glycosuria following the ingestion of carbohydrate or glucose because of reduced output of insulin and/or reduced rate of glucose metabolism with a reduced ability to form glycogen.

If you must have a GTT, I'd suggest reintroducing carbs a few days before the test. I've heard of practitioners recommending them because of higher than normal fasting glucose levels, which is normal and stable when ketoadapted.

My mom took one of those a few days ago and the doctor told her to eat more carbs than normal for about 3 days before that.
RawNut

That's great! She has a good doctor.
Lottie

Yep. She really likes him. Unfortunately, even with the extra carbs her blood sugar was still high enough that they had to cut the test short. It may be that she has diabetes after all. Sad

Is she on zero carb? What was her fasting glucose level? I hope she can control it with diet alone.

Wishing her luck,

Craig

Even in Atkins book you are adviced to eat carbs for up to 2 days before taking a glucose tolerance test.

I tested it on myself and it took me one day of eating carbs  and not eating fats to have proper glucose tolerance curve.

It was still slightly elevated but I didn't care to eat carbs for another day to improve it.

Thanks for your support, Craig, I hope so, too. No, she eats the food pyramid diet -- low fat; controled calories; no table sugar, salt, chips, or sweets; lots of salads, vegetables, wild rice, and whole wheat bread; and little meat. She also already has a number of indicators for diabetes, so it won't be a surprise (though it is disappointing) if the doctor says this is it. I don't know her numbers, but after a 12 hour fast it was still high enough that the techs refused to give her the glucose.

I've been trying to get her onto LC, even if it's just eliminating bread and rice. She's been really supportive of my diet, even in the extreme, because of all the good it's done for my health, but it's not something she sees as healthy for the entire population and/or herself.

You don't need luck to control blood glucose levels with diet. All you need is a willpower to follow the diet. Nothing else.

Some aren't lucky enough to have any willpower at all. Besides, I was wishing her luck in general. Would it be better to say that I hope she does well? I'm sorry I confused you.
Lottie

That's the way I read it. Good wishes are kind regardless of semantics.

Nevermind what woof woof says. He has the tact and subtlety of a rhinoceros horn up the arse. Wink
