Fish jerkyI know that technically, you CAN make fish jerky. But has anyone here actually done it and enjoyed the taste?
I've got a ton of fish that I need to put up. Will probably end up freezing it, but would love to have some variety.

Mostly crappy and perch, but good size. Some 'bows too, but I think I'll save those for the skillet.

I've never tasted it, but I've seen salmon jerky before. It was loaded with sugar or maple syrup or something, though, so I didn't bother trying it. I think you'd have to cure it first so it wouldn't go bad while drying out? Maybe not.

I think they'll be ok without a cure because they're not fatty fish. I just don't want to make a bunch of fish jerky and find out that it tastes awful. But now I'm thinking that it might be good to use rehydrated in a soup or chowder, maybe on camping trips.

Results are in. I was afraid fish jerky was going to taste like bait. It wasn't anywhere near that bad, but it's not something I'd choose to eat as a meal or snack when I've got so much other good food around. Glad I only made one batch of it. I still have hopes that it will reconsistute into a good soup, though.

Puma, did you ever try making fish jerky? We could be getting another good batch of fish this weekend, and I'm thinking of giving it another go, but this time with a really light cold smoke.

Did you ever find out if the jerky made good soup? That seems like it would be handy to have around for lazy days.

Yeah, the soup was decent, mainly just cream and the fish and parsley. The fish maintained a nicer texture due to the drying, not as likely to flake to bits. I think it would be handy for camping.
