Eating raw for weight lossI'm reading a book by Carol Alt called Eating in the Raw - A beginner's guide to getting slimmer, feeling healthier, and looking younger the raw-food way. She lost weight by eating only raw foods and says she maintains her weight without even trying to. "I'm almost never hungry and always satisfied when I eat. I eat what I want-but just raw. I don't count raw calories or raw fat grams." She also eats raw meat and raw fish, unlike a lot of raw foodists who are raw vegans.
I'd recommend the book. I got it from the library. I don't know if eating only raw would help one to lose weight effortlessly as I've not tried it. She says she cheats once in awhile and has popcorn.

Since I was a very young child, I always preferred almost raw meats. I remember my Mom asking me to stir the ground beef on the stove while she had to do something. By the time she came back, half of the pound of meat was gone...guess where? She never did know what happened there, she couldn't conceive of anyone eating raw meat and thought it was the grade of beef and that it had shrunk! I didn't argue with her conclusion.

I do not doubt the merits of eating raw meats. Veggies I'm not so sure about, but maybe. What sort of ratios did she advocate eating as far as veggies/meat go?
Bear talked about the "unsocial" nature of his diet, and this one would be even more so. I guess since she eats veggies, though, she could eat a salad, but raw eating pretty much rules out restaurants (there are notable exceptions, of course.) Did she used to model? Is that the same Carol Alt I'm thinking of?
I like to read about people's eating habits, so I'll try to find this. Even if the whole premise doesn't fit for me, I'm sure I could get some pointers.

Carol Alt (model and actress) doesn't give any ratios of meat/veggies. She has a chapter on eating out and will eat seared meat/fish at restaurants along with salads and fresh fruit. Her website is

Carolyn, have you finished reading the book yet? I checked out the link, the book sounds very interesting. I read it has some promising raw meat recipes in it. Are you trying to go all raw yourself? I'd love to hear what you are finding out from this book. Do you plan on starting a journal?

I just finished reading the book. Raw meat recipes? I don't think so. I just checked and there are 3 raw fish recipes, that's it. Most of the recipes are vegan (she's not) and some are from raw food restaurants. The book is worth reading. I got it from the library. I don't really use any recipes.
I'm trying to eat my meats more rare and I eat some raw but most are cooked. I like the taste of cooked meats better. I eat all my dairy raw along with raw egg yolks.
I'm not planning on starting a journal. I am fairly new to low-carb. (I keep my carbs to under 10/day.) I don't have any weight to lose, and am doing low-carb for the health benefits and for weight maintenance. (I have been overweight and I have been underweight. Now at 50, I am at a good weight.) I read Life Without Bread a while back because another WAPF leader recommended it. I am following a WAPF type way of eating along with Nourishing Traditons. I met Dean on the Native Nutrition yahoo group when he posted about not eating any carbs. Then he told me about the low carb forum and then this new forum. I really like the simplicity of the carnivore way of eating and the fact that I'm not hungry all the time like I used to be, especially before finding WAPF. I used to be a low-fat vegan. Now I'm a high-fat carnivore! I don't like grocery shopping or cooking, so I like to keep my meals easy and simple.
As for exercise, I do Pilates 2 days/week and weight-lifting/resistance exercises 2 days/week. This has been my routine for the last year and a half. It's just part of my weekly schedule of things to do. (Before that I went on daily walks.) I'm a SAHM with one in college and one in middle school so I have the entire day to myself. It's heavenly!

Oh hmm. Only 3 raw fish recipes. Oh well. I might check it out at the library though.
I do like the taste of cooked meats as well, but like including raw/rare as well. I have Nourishing Traditions as well and follow WAPF guidelines. I used the pregnancy diet recommendations for my second pregnancy as well as I could. I started taking Cod liver oil at that time and that has made a huge improvement in my health. Do you make stocks? I was thinking stocks would make a great addition to a mostly meat menu. I haven't made any in a while, but I have a chicken I plan on using for stock, and beef bones for beef stock too.
One in college and one in middle school, wow. I have a 3 yr old boy, and an 8 month old girl. I can't believe how quickly they are growing up before my eyes.
Even if you don't have weight to lose, a journal may inspire others. But if you never start a journal here I hope you at least stick around. Seems like you have lots of good knowledge to share!

As to eating raw meats, I recently tried raw scallops and raw shrimp. They tasted almost like cooked so I plan on buying more. The raw oysters were good too. I was avoiding fish/seafood due to the mercury but I decided to add it back. One raw-fooder told me that he ate a lot of fish/seafood when he first started eating raw because it tastes like the cooked versions. Scallops and shrimp are more expensive than red meats, at least here in Wis. Organ meats are the cheapest of all.
Yes, I do make stock occassionally. I haven't been eating chicken lately because I read that red meats are more nutrient-dense. Plus, I'm experimenting with raw and I don't know if I want to eat chicken raw. I have some lamb and mutton bones in the freezer to make broth with but I will probably wait until the fall to make it when the weather's cooler. I may have some beef bones by then too.
I plan to stick around. Ask me any questions you'd like.

I just clicked the link and vegetables are prominently displayed on the page, and nowhere did I see that she even mentions meat or fish. Maybe I missed it.
My aunt got into this food thing called something like Sundowner's. It's all raw (called "live") good. Maybe I'll google it. It did her, her DH, and her daughter a ton of good. At least they all lost weight. Don't know about their lipid profiles, etc.

she mentions raw fish in the book and has 3 recipes for raw fish. she also mentions eating raw dairy so she is not a vegan or a vegetarian.

Bawdy,
what is Sundowner's? I did an internet search and couldn't find anything.

Gee, sorry I never answered. I tried a Google search, too, and found nothing. I probably have the name wrong. I'm also sure my aunt's plan had no room for meat. Probably strictly veggies and fruit.

From everything i have read and researched i think Raw Vegan is dangerous!! We need some meat/protein in our diets!! I tried Raw Vegan for 5 days and felt like i was constantly starving!! i even had stomach pains i was so hungry..lol
If going Raw i would highly recommend some raw steak and fish!!
Also the more i read the more i realize that 100% raw is NOT the best diet...70-80% raw with SOME cooked food is better for health!!

Probably something like 'sunfood' - there is a sunfood raw vegan movement over here in Europe, too. See for example: David Wolfe's Sunfood Diet Success System.
I've been to a raw vegan food convention years ago, peole gorging on tons of tropical fruits, and even then I noticed that the vegans seemed to be seriously malnourished, only the instincto eaters - who ate raw agg yolk and meats and fish - seemed to be somewhat healthy (but most of them were not exactly what I would call sane...)
