Eating a meal before bed

Is this bad?

i almost have to eat a big meal before bed because i work until 9pm
ReddyMcMeaty

I personally don't think it's bad.

a lot of people say that the food just rots and turns to fat, and also your body does most of its repairing during the night and that digesting food will take away from the repair process?

true?

How can food rot in your body?? That just sounds ridiculous. Not that you're ridiculous, but that whoever said that is an idiot. Laugh Your body is very complex and it knows what to do. If you're hungry before bed, then eat. Are you overweight? Underweight? Is this a weight/health concern, or just something you're curious about?

Roll Eyes  most people also say that it's important to eat frequently to keep the metabolism high. http://www.bodyrecomposition.com/...ce-research-review.html#more-1389

I think it's not a good idea to eat before bed. Remember food is fuel. You don't need fuel before sleeping. Better to have a good filling dinner.  It doesn't rot, but it doesn't get properly utilized either.

Some foods are more indigestible than others, but in general i find that I sleep better if I don't eat at night.  The only flaw in that plan is I get so hungry at night!  Why does my body get so hungry at night if it's not good to eat at night?  Well, hardly eating anything for breakfast probably has something to do with it.  By the time night comes it's been a long time since I last ate...

I have a lot of energy on an empty stomach, I can't sleep.  I usually sleep well on a small snack but not stuffed,  or having eaten well a couple of hours before bed.

If I fast for too long before bed, I actually have a higher blood glucose in the morning. A small snack before bed helps me keep a more stable BG (by helping me to mobilize fat properly during the night? Dunno). I know it sounds weird, but... what can I say? That's what my blood glucose shows.

Well, theoretically, if one is not capable of breaking down and utilizing all components of the food consumed (due to intestinal disease or otherwise), the undigested foodstuffs can sit in the intestines and be fermented and/or putrefied by intestinal microbes.

Which makes it interesting that so many vegetarians advise against meat eating because they say it 'putrefies' in the intestines... Well, what do you call it when all those microbes are feeding off of and breaking down all that plant material and fiber in the intestine and colon that the human digestive system is (arguably) not capable of breaking down itself and utlizing?... One could argue that that their food is rotting in a similar way as claimed for meat (even though I don't believe this to be completely true).

And define 'snack'. I've heard people doing well with an egg yolk or two before bedtime, but I've never tried it myself. Good for sleeping I've heard also.

So if you do choose to snack, snack light and sensible. No Twinkies or Yodels! Did i write that out loud?  Shock  Grin

P.S. Remember the word Breakfast is that for a reason. You're breaking a fast. Give your body the time it needs to do it's thing... or not as the case may be.

If you have malabsorption issues from intestinal disease, then you might have fermentation problems, it's true, but that doesn't have much to do with eating before bed. You'd be having those issues, regardless. Food does not 'rot' in your body because you're not immediately burning it up with exercise.

And something like an egg yolk or two is what I mean by 'snack'. Not a twinkie, or a full meal. Also, having a small snack before bed does not nullify the fast your body goes through overnight. You're still going many hours without food. I'm not talking about getting up in the middle of the night to eat. My point is, if you're uncomfortable before bed, due to hunger, try eating something small.

Fiber does always rot in the gut...

Those of you against fiber might find this interesting

There are two kinds of dietary fiber — soluble and insoluble. Both kinds are indigestible, and, nutritionally speaking, useless — not an iota of vitamins, minerals, or proteins between them. Once inside the body, both fibers whip up noxious gases, toxic alcohols, and irritating acids — the common byproducts of bacterial fermentation, which, in turn, cause equally common flatulence, bloating, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea.
