According to this article fat increases appetite?I was searching around and found an article on the atkins diet.
http://www.abc.net.au/catalyst/stories/s1087754.htm
The first part says the "metabolic advantage" of atkins diet vs low fat is only 22 calories (they tested each on twins)
But the next part is interesting - it says:
"The Atkins diet is famous for its fat. Dr Atkins said you could eat as much of it as you like. Is it possible that fat could be suppressing appetite?
To find out Susan Jebb and her team decided to run an experiment.
All the meals in the study looked exactly the same, but there was a big difference. Half the food had liberal quantities of fat secretly added to it.
SUSAN JEBB:
We used things like spaghetti bolognaise or mousses so that you could because easily disguise the fat content of the food.
NARRATOR (BARBARA FLYNN):
None of the volunteers knew which type of food they were getting. But half of them were eating low fat meals, and half were eating high fat meals.
SUSAN JEBB:
What we told them is they could eat as much or as little as they wanted and they simply just had to ask when they wanted more food.
NARRATOR (BARBARA FLYNN):
If fat was the magic ingredient that switches appetite off, then the men eating the high fat food would fewer calories than normal to feel full.
After four hundred and eighty six meals the results were clear.
The fat was having the exact opposite effect.
The men on the high fat food needed more calories to satisfy their appetite.
They were actually overeating.
SUSAN JEBB:
What we conclude from that is that fat doesn’t make people feel full. It doesn’t trigger the sense of fullness and satiety that we believe is fundamental to appetite control."
They go on to suggest its protein and some studies prove it.
So what gives? i thought fat was "key"?

No comment. I want to comment but I won't comment. Am I commenting by not commenting and commenting about not commenting? I'm in deep now aren't I?

I didn't know you were anti-fat as well as anti-killing. Why is that? I mean aside from the interest in McDougall? I thought you were still diggin' the fat. You know - raw egg yolks and kerrygold, etc.

When fat is mixed with carbs I can eat until comatose. I WANT to eat until comatose. Most people have claimed fat to be satiating, but I have not found it so, it also makes me want to eat more very low carb stuff because it's tasty. I think it's healthy, but haven't found that it shuts off any desire to eat. That being said, when in ketosis I rarely have true hunger. A blob of fat is not satisfying as a meal, but it doesn't leave me truly hungry.

Their test meals were spaghetti and mousse. Both of those are really carby! Carbs + fat is always a bad combo, because the carbs will just make you want to eat more and more and more and the fat makes it taste delicious. I remember before starting LC that I would eat to the point where I was literally so full of food that I couldn't eat another bite without it coming up, but I still "felt" hungry. Ugh.
The low-fatters probably stopped eating their meals because they were tasteless and nasty.

I think fat is satiating, up to a point. Like, if I ate 800 calories of lean protein foods, I'd be starved and totally desperate for more food. Bring that number up to 1500 calories with fat and I'd feel fine - satiated. Bring it up another 500 calories to 2000 and I don't feel any more full than at 1500. Same goes for 2500. It seems I can add endless amounts of fat without ever really feeling overly full. Until it hits me at the end of the night and I get some nausea, sometimes. That only usually happens if I haven't been eating enough fat, though. Once I'm 'primed' for fat, I can handle any amount, it seems.

How'd I miss this one
Hey Red. I'm not anti fat. I am fat unsure at the moment. I think I was going to comment on how filling Oatmeal and Potatoes have been for me lately... did I just make a comment after all OMG! Truth is I don't remember what my original comment was going to be so there. But if I were to comment...

Fat really fills me and there is so much I can eat. The higher my fat intake, the less I eat during the day.

Thats strange, because for me a lot of fat leaves me hungry again in 2-3 hours...lately i have been getting hungry every 2-3 hours and its driving me insane. I acutally was woken up this morning by my stomach growling...and i ate a good dinner last night... I dont know what to do I just had my period so I thought that was it, but now its gone but the appetite isn't. All I'm eating is eggs, butter, and meat (chicken thighs or steak).

I'm sorry Opti, and this may seem obvious, but have you checked for leaks lately? What?

Well this is just an update, I think that was just my TOM or something, but now I seem to have gotten rid of the hungry every 2-3 hours thing...phew thank goodness!
but i definitely think fat+carbs = hungry and fat+protein = not hungry too...i mean, the food that gave me the most grief ever (peanut butter) was a mixture of fat +carbs...and that made it hard to stop eating...(notice past tense, i dont eat it anymore!! YAY )

I definitely think it's the fat and protein combined that satiates me. And am I the only one who thinks it is ridiculous that they tried to disprove the success of Atkins by adding fat to high-carb foods?! All that proves is that you shouldn't eat a lot of carbs.

Cake and ice cream make you fat?? Imagine that!

they didn't say how many carbs per day the people in the study were eating. I have found that if i eat carbs mixed with fat i can eat TONS of it. if i am very low carb (under 15) then i get nauseus if i eat too much fat and stop eating. Their experiment proves NOTHING except that carbs plus fat = FAT PEOPLE...so ditch the carbs and up the fat i say!

Yeah I agree...
And that stupid satiety index thing that was done in Australia (I think) had high fat foods as low satiety and high fiber/carb foods like a potato as high satiety...
the claimed the high fat foods were croissants and pastries...uhhh what?? thats high carb/high fat!
then again they have peanuts/almonds/nuts as very low satiety, and thats high fat/low carbish...dunno how that worked but there are other studies out there that claimed they had high satiety...
I'm sick of all this contradicting info! one article says fat increases appetite, one says it is satiating...

oh and I forgot about this
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SqYQbrL8dRs
they claim protein is the most satiating, carbs the second, and fat the least!
EDIT: heres another: http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0887/is_5_24/ai_n13795375
high protein, low fat vs high fat (mono), low protein, and while they were similar, they said that the subjects desired less to eat after the high protein, low fat...
