I am thinking about going to the pool for exercise, Dh found out it opens at 6am a few days per week and since we're awake at that time anyway... maybe we could go together, bring the worm, and take turns watching him and doing laps.
Anyway, I can swim..and took lessons when I was a kid but eventually want to really learn how to swim. It would be fun to one day in the future partake in a sprint triathlon and the swimming is the only thing I'd be worried about kicking my ass. Biking and running shouldn't be a big deal to build up on without help.
Just starting some conversation here.

Meg, I'm a swimmer and do so every day. It is so relaxing and exhilarating at the same time. Especially out here in the desert with the temps in the triple digits. I was lucky when I bought our pool, a house came with it!!! _________________ Bobi

I'm like you Meg, I can swim but have never really done much of it. I took diving lessons as a kid.
I really hate chlorine pools, there is a new fad to switch pools over to salt water which would be nice. Most pools are indoor around here.
Then there is the kids that need supervision and there are no public pools within 30 min driving from here.
What are the distances for a sprint triathlon? |

Okay, we have an inground pool, but I've only used it two times in the last year. Last year I bought one of those jogging things, so you can "water jog" in place. Also two floaty things that look like dumbbells and you move through the water.
I didn't even go in the pool yesterday, just hung out with my legs in the water. I'm weird, though. I swam my whole life, in high school, college, in lakes, pools, took aqua aerobics, I just don't care to swim anymore. I did get a couple of bad yeast infections, plus stuff I read about how readily your skin absorbs chlorine, and how clorine causes cancer, so maybe it all mixes up in my head, and I just don't do it.
I think it is one of the best exercises, swimming. That is so cool that you are thinking of doing a triathalon. A guy I worked with was a triathlete, and wow, did he look awesome when he came in from his noon swim (family run, very casual business). So it's great overall conditioning.
Sorry for babbling! |

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triathlon
The distances for a sprint are:
Swim750 m Bike20 km Run5 km
Hm.. an olympic is: Swim 1.5 km Bike40 km Run10 km
The only reason I am even seriously considering it is Heather! My aunt has been telling me for a year how she has started to train for this triathalon, and is doing a sprint etc. and I was like oh man that is cool.... but Heather in here with her marathon and incredible weightloss and fitness really has me going. Right now the only thing I can comfortably do is bike - I'm afraid to try the running...pregnancy and nursing shot my boobs up to an E so we're looking at wearing about 5 layers in order to get the support to keep these milkers from bouncing and knocking me out. I hate distance anything and prefer the power sports but I can DO 5k!!! I SO want to start running in the next month so that I can continue it throughout pregnancy. If can't because of the oh so wonderful joint issues we get I'll just bike and start running afterward. _________________ "Man lives on one quarter of what he eats. I love swimming. I've been doing it seriously since about age 13. I've found that swimming is a doddle on no carbs - I can swim a lot further than ever before. However this is at a medium pace - not sure about sprinting. I'm still having probs with energy on very low carbs after 9 months for things like tennis training. Still trying to work that one out.
But swimming - eaaasy. It's a great sport for easing up tight muscles as well.

Thanks for all the responses. I've started to go to the pool with the worm and dh, I do some lengths but nothing serious ... am working up to it I find the hardest thing with the front stroke is breathing, I totally run out of breath and am alternating between gasping and holding my breath. Oh well, it's a slow long term project to get better at swimming. _________________ "Man lives on one quarter of what he eats. On the other three quarters lives his doctor." |

when I first started doing front-crawl I took a breath every two strokes - once you have a good rhythm and can go longer try two then four - that's what I do now. I always breathe on the same side - it just feels more natural. I think you'll be impressed with your arm muscles and chest tone after swimming a lot. I really packed on muscle which helped for tennis swimming every day.

I do about 100 laps of the breast stroke, using the frog kick. Defines arms, thighs, belly and pectorals. Once you know how to do that particular stroke, it is very relaxing, even when you use the racing stroke. _________________ Bobi

front crawl *front stroke* is best learnt from a professional. seeing az, its considered the fastest *sum argue for butterfly, but thats more difficult to learn so* and cud save ur life, or someone elses someday.
worth every penny

I love to swim, and go once a week-- but with butt-length dreadlocks-- well, let's just say it takes my hair a looooooong time to dry. So once, twice a week is about all I can do.
