Hi there,
I just started doing these... meaning I can only do a few, and even that one at a time...
I was wondering how many folks here do them, how many you do, what benefits you have found...
My arms are really sore and feel like they are growing already (according to my SO)...
just wanted to get the clan's input...

I do about 20 with just bodyweight and get less depending what weight I use. Sometimes I do singles with a 65 lb dumbbell between my feet and sometimes I bang out sets of 10-15 with my weight vest.
I like to do them supersetted with chins and do a "50/20" workout with just bodyweight.
Great for arms and back, imho. _________________ "Change. Nothin' stays the same. Unchained...And ya hit the ground runnin'."

Jesus, you must be in great shape. Damn!
Why don't you come out here and "spot" me?!?
Golooraam, do you swim in the Bay? I just got back from a swim at Aquatic Park. Kind of cold today, since the ambient temp is only about 65! But it's so stimulating!
When I got out, I was shaking like one of those cats that doesn't have hair. |

Do you know where Aquatic Park is? It's at the foot of Hyde Street, where the Hyde Street pier is at Fisherman's Wharf. The Powell Street cablecar runs down there.
There are two swim clubs down there, the Dolphin and the South End clubs, and if you are not a member, you can pay a small day rate for a locker and shower. They have a private beach at the back of the clubs, so you don't have to walk out on the public beach in your swimsuit where all the touristas are hanging out. The bottom is sandy, so you just walk right in. Doesn't hit you until the water reaches your abdomen (the viscera), and then it's fucking cold!!! But you get used to it.
I was out there about 45 minutes and it was great. There were about 4 others out there. The water was 59 degrees. (They post the temp daily inside the club.) I'm thinking of doing another Alcatraz swim. No wetsuit, just a Neoprene swimcap to prevent heat escaping.

The cap must really help with that shivering cat look. This is a really cute image. _________________ I'm a vegetable-eater by proxy. I make sure to get 5-10 servings of herbivore per day. |

Originally I could do 0. Now I can bang about 6 @ a bodyweight of 215.
I went back to doing them in a heavy negative(lowering only) fashion to try and build my biceps up more. So...me+70 db...10 second reps.
Sim has me beat by a wide margin. I'll have to strap a cow to my back when I do them so I can build to his level. ;) _________________ Viking Dan

I've known people that make 15-20 seem downright pathetic.
I'm just somewhat obsessed with them because when I went in the service I could barely do 3 or 4 and that's when I realized my upper body strength really sucked. That and I got sick of the damn DI screaming at me. LOL

my humble improvements: yesterday I did 2 chinups in a row for the first time... previously I did sets of 1, five or 6 times |

An interesting variation is to extend your feet out in front of you when you do them. It seems to hit the back more. _________________ Viking Dan

Do you mean flex at the waist, kind of? Not 90 degrees, but a little flexion at the waist with the legs extended and feet flexed? _________________ A surfer looks down the beach at Malibu towards the fire. |

Legs as parallel to the floor as you can manage. It seems to engage the back more...and the abs of course.
Now for a video to make us all feel we suck at chin ups: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ZOjNz6bjIs
And here's one to REALLY make you feel out of shape:
